Actual people as electors prevented a President Aaron Burr, an ancestor of Al Gore, with a comparable megalomaniac complex.

The fact remains that, those actual "people as electors", should not be voting against the will of the people. The people are the deciders, and they should not be overruled by the "dictatorial" decision of one elector who probably didn't even vote for the candidate that the voters chose by majority.

That a candidate isn't fit to be president, as you suggested, should not enter into the picture. It's the people who decide, and not an elector who might not represent the will of the people. That is not to suggest that "the will of the majority of voters" is how the president should be elected, because, the electoral college system has worked very well since it was instituted.

You are speaking of Cosmic justice, not how the constitution was designed. The electors may have saved the Republic by putting Thomas Jefferson in office rather than Aaron Burr. And, yes, the electors also thwarted the clear plurality of the people when they chose John Quincy Adams over Andrew Jackson.

But J. Quincy was a one term president and Andrew Jackson followed him easily four years later.

There is a reason we elect actual people as electors. If you don't like it, then get the constitution changed.
