There is a massive nine-alarm fire blazing in Cambridge near Berkshire and York Streets.
Nine alarms are the most that can be called. Firefighters from communities well outside the area being called in. Cambridge police are asking that the public avoid the area.
Multiple buildings are on fire, including a church. At least one building has reportedly collapsed.
Fire companies from all corners are on-scene to assist, including from Boston, Newton, Waltham and Wakefield.

In the poorer sections, cold weather brings some residents to use space-heaters. It’s also December, which means Christmas trees and lights. Add smoking and candle use and it’s a real problem at this time of year.

Yep, seems like it was always the space heaters when I was growing up in Mass. Now you can add some third-world, hotplate in the bedroom type cooking techniques to the possibilities.

Yes. I stayed with a family, renting a room in a finished attic in Cambridge years ago as a student. These are old buildings, with old electrical wiring etc. - unless updated to code. I've grew up in the city, and have lived in several, and it always seems that this time of year (holidays, Christmas) there were often fires in old buildings. Don't know why. Wiring overloaded by holiday lighting? Christmas trees on fire? Very sad. Worst time of the year for this.
