I've seen it written many times that somewhere around half of Americans who identify themselves as Jewish also say they're atheists.So to many "Jewish" is an ethnicity rather than a religious affiliation.

Ten bucks says that this particular "Jew" is an atheist.

I would say to most rather than many. I know Christians who tell me they are Jewish.
