USC faculty member fatally stabbed on campus, suspect in custody

One person, a male faculty member, has been fatally stabbed on the USC campus and a suspect is in custody.

The victim is a man, approximately 25 years old, says Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Just after 4:30 p.m., firefighter paramedics responded to a reported stabbing on the 3600 block of McClintock Avenue, located on campus near the Seeley G. Mudd building and the school’s running track.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Stewart said. No other injuries have been reported.

USC’s college newspaper The Daily Trojan reported on Twitter that police locked down the Seeley G. Mudd building and students were advised to stay away from the area.

An officer from the LAPD’s Southwest community station confirmed officers were investigating a homicide and had at least one suspect in custody.

In a separate incident, a male suspect who was reported to have been acting aggressively sprayed a woman with a fire extinguisher inside the Doheny Library at USC. The library was evacuated, but the incident is unrelated to the fatal stabbing at the campus’ Seeley G. Mudd building, according to the Daily Trojan.

Great story - very funny about looking behind the TV.

Stark contrast to the sad news about this professor's death.

Google bypassed the search until I entered LA Times and the perp’s name.

Thanks, still no pictures or any other data.

“Per LAT, LA resident Jonathan David Brown.”

28 year old graduate student. Still no photo.

I was curious about that. A 25 year old PhD is not very common.

Subtlety in this instance is unhelpful. If you have a point, kindly make it directly.

Sure it is. Many go straight to a PhD program at 21 -22. Many Masters programs are one year or two years. Many students abandon a Masters and transfer to the PhD program after 1 year.

In the fields I am familiar with (economics, finance, accounting, history, and political science), a PH.D. program takes 4-5 years, and that’s if everything goes well. At one time, it was possible to get a Ph.D. In Chemistry in three years but I think those days are gone. I estimate that fewer than 15% of all newly minted Ph.D.s. are younger than 26.

There was some confusion in the posts and in the story. Or mistakes.

The victim was a middle aged man. The perp was a 25 year old PhD student. One is a PhD student when one is in a program. When one has been awarded a PhD, then they are no longer a “student.”

How long will they be saying that his motivation is not clear? Anyone want to start a betting pool? One shekel for a month.

Yes, there are many 25-year-old Ph.D. students but very few 25-year-old Ph.D.s.

I was offered a three year PhD program in History back in the day. Thank God I passed on it. I’d be a college prof today and probably as miserable as most of them seem to be.

The mediots are probably hiding something they don’t want out on this loser.

This may be a possibility: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=asperger%27s+syndrome+in+adults

I kept typing in his name on Facebook. I was so curious to see who he was! If you’re on FB, I’m sure you know they have news stories in addition to personal accounts. Yesterday I finally found that link that Mary Cummins posted on a news page.

I thought it was interesting she mentioned Aspergers. He does appear as if he has the symptoms. I wonder if that was a guess or does she know if he was ever diagnosed. As you can see, bail was increased to $2 million yesterday.

She says the family is “wealthy.” I did some research and found that they live in a $265,000, 1660sq.ft house. To me that’s not wealthy, but some people live modestly with lots in the bank. Some people I’ve shared the link with think that the reason his photo and family background has not been made public is because of their money and connections.

How many years had he been going to USC?

His shrink expenses and college expense would be very big.
