Trump Likely Just Infuriated China With The US's First Call To Taiwan Since 1979 Alex Lockie and Natasha Bertrand,

President-elect Donald Trump spoke with the president of Taiwan by phone on Friday, in a move likely to infuriate Beijing and hinder US-China relations.

"President-elect Trump spoke with President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan, who offered her congratulations," according to a readout of the call released by Trump's transition team. "During the discussion, they noted the close economic, political, and security ties" between Taiwan and the United States, the statement continued. "President-elect Trump also congratulated President Tsai on becoming President of Taiwan earlier this year."

The call, first reported by the Financial Times, is the first time a US president has directly spoken with Taiwan's leadership in more than 30 years. The White House was not made aware of the call until after it occurred, according to The New York Times.

The US suspended formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1979 after establishing a One China position — which states that "there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China" — in an effort to establish diplomatic channels with Beijing.

Beijing views Taiwan as a province of China, whereas Taiwan — which has its own democratically elected government — has a more complicated view of the nations' relationship.

Ing-wen, who was elected the first female president of Taiwan in May, told The Washington Post over the summer that she hopes Chinese President Xi Jinping "can appreciate that Taiwan is a democratic society in which the leader has to follow the will of the people."

Analysts were quick to point out that the phone call will likely infuriate Beijing.

"Trump almost surely unaware of Taiwan-China sensitivities before taking President's call," Bremmer added. "They don't yet have Asia expertise on team."

Well, no.

Trump is not President yet, so it can’t be the first time in 30 years a U.S. President has spoken with Taiwan’s leadership.

I think Trump knew exactly what he was doing - to serve notice that he is not going to tiptoe around the Chinese. He will challenge those artificial islands the Chinese are creating too.

1) Cancel TPP.
2) Call Taiwan.
3) Invite Phillipines to meet.
4) Watch China’s currency decline 7% since elected.
5) Ask China how it’s going so far?

I have to admit, I’m not tired of it, but he may want to slow down the pace so I can fully savor each one!

It gets better. At the end of WW2 when Japan surrendered, Taiwan was in US hands. Somehow, it was never officially given back. If China invaded, we’d be obligated to defend Taiwan.

Another highly educated fool heard from.

In 1998, Ian Bremmer founded Eurasia Group, the first firm devoted exclusively to helping investors and business decision-makers understand the impact of politics on the risks and opportunities in foreign markets. Ian's idea—to bring political science to the investment community and to corporate decision-makers—launched an industry and positioned Eurasia Group to become the world leader in political risk analysis and consulting.

Trump has a longstanding relationship with China.

This is not just some ignorant “cowboy” shooting from the hip.

Stay tuned!

Was TRUMP supposed to hang up on the TAIWAN President? LOL

My reading of this is that the call came from the Taiwan President and was not placed by Trump. Seems some posters here, not you, may be overlooking how this conversation came to be.

Just like he called Duarte of the Philippines and the President of Singapore.

We have to show our allies in the Pacific that we are, once again, allies...no longer run by a Pacific Pivoting, community organizing b.s. artist.
