Trump likely just infuriated China with the US’s first call to Taiwan since 1979

President-elect Donald Trump spoke with the president of Taiwan by phone on Friday, in a move likely to infuriate Beijing and hinder US-China relations.

"President-elect Trump spoke with President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan, who offered her congratulations," according to a readout of the call released by Trump's transition team.

"During the discussion, they noted the close economic, political, and security ties" between Taiwan and the United States, the statement continued. "President-elect Trump also congratulated President Tsai on becoming President of Taiwan earlier this year."

The call, first reported by the Financial Times, is the first time a US president has directly spoken with Taiwan's leadership in more than 30 years.

The US suspended formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1979 after establishing a One China position — which states that "there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China" — in an effort to establish diplomatic channels with Beijing.

Beijing views Taiwan as a province of China, whereas Taiwan — which has its own democratically elected government — has a more complicated view of the nations' relationship.

Ing-wen, who was elected the first female president of Taiwan in May, told The Washington Post over the summer that she hopes Chinese President Xi Jinping "can appreciate that Taiwan is a democratic society in which the leader has to follow the will of the people."

Analysts were quick to point out that the phone call will likely infuriate Beijing.

"Trump has phone call w Taiwan President, 1st by US Pres or Pres-elect since 1979," goepolitical expert Ian Bremmer, president of Eurasia Group, tweeted on Friday. "Beijing will be absolutely incensed."

Who cares???
Taiwan is a friend and is deserving of a hello phone call from our president elect.
Really China?? Relax.
I will say that CNN is probably more upset about this than China is.

This is fantastic.

Can’t give Trump enough kudos.

If Trump can oversee the end of the ChiCom regime, he would be at Reagan level.

“Beijing will be absolutely incensed.”

Not as incensed as they will be when Trump starts making trade with China work for us.

Actually, the message was to Chicaps. China is becoming more like Taiwan than Taiwan is becoming like China.

The young people in both countries will gradually decide the issue as the old Chicoms die out and political evolution progresses away from the old ways to some unknown but different form

I was in Taipei in December 1979 when in the dead of night
Carter switched embassies from Taipei to Beijing.

We American students there studying Chinese, as well as
American travellers, holed up where we could while the
drama played out in the streets, anger against the US for abandonment.

There is a section of China called the Pearl River Delta. Hong Kong is on one side of the estuary and Macau is on the other.

Nine relatively small cities have grown and merged into an area the size of New Hampshire and Vermont. The population has grown tp 68 million people. The GDP of this area makes it the thirteenth largest economy in the world.

Number 14 is Russia. It’s easy to denigrate China and speak erroneously of junk they make but that is delusion. There are vast numbers of young people wanting better lives and are willingto work hard to achieve aims. There are tens of thousands sent abroad for top of the line educations. These young ambitious people will not be held back

Screw the PRC, the ROC loves us despite Carter and thanks to Reagan, once they realized the US wasn’t going to let them be invaded. We still have a presence in Taipei and Kaohsiung and will have Marine Security Guards there, just like any other Embassy. If not for Carter, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were the 51st state by now.

China and Taiwain have been two countries for 69 years. It’s not like Trump announced that hte US was recognizing as illegal the ChiCom occupation of East Turkestan and Tibet.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Remember when Nixon created a breakthrough with China to complete the encirclement of the USSR?

Well now it’s China’s turn. I predict the reach out to Taiwan will be followed by reach out to Russia; and suddenly, China’s geopolitical situation is drastically different than they thought. Add India in the mix pretty soon too.

Trump is reshaping the chess board.

"Trump almost surely unaware of Taiwan-China sensitivities before taking President's call," Bremmer added. "They don't yet have Asia expertise on team."

BS. Trump is very aware of it.

He just refuses to play the globalist's game.

The newest overused word on the internet is “just”. It joins “jaw-dropping”, “insane” and “reach out”. Actually “reach out” is two words that get overused together. But still.
