I don't really have a problem with her doing this. The mandatory retirement period was written into law for a reason, so there ought to be a really good reason to waive it.
There's nothing outlandish about a member of Congress who thinks "Donald Trump wants to nominate James Mattis" isn't a good enough reason.

Civilian control of our military is a fundamental principle of American democracy, and I will not vote for an exception to this rule. As far as I'm concerned, the civilian control of the military rests with the Commander in Chief, not the Defense Secretary.
