The White House (Obama) Says Women Should Be Required to Register for the Military Draft
NY Mag ^

The White House and the Pentagon on Thursday respectively announced support for requiring women in the U.S. to register for the military draft when they turn 18, USA Today reports.

The announcement makes Barack Obama the first president since Jimmy Carter to endorse universal registration for the Selective Service. The White House previously was pretty neutral on the subject, but in a new statement to USA Today, Ned Price, a spokesman for the National Security Council, revealed the administration had changed its stance:

“As old barriers for military service are being removed, the administration supports — as a logical next step — women registering for the Selective Service.”

The Pentagon echoed Obama’s support, with spokesman Peter Cook saying in a statement, “It makes sense for women to register for Selective Service just as men must.”

The statement came the day before the House of Representatives is set to vote on a defense bill that would remove a provision that passed the Senate to add women to the draft, according to USA Today. Instead, a compromise version wants a commission to investigate whether women should be included in the Selective Service or if the draft should even exist.

Obama apparently supports an all-volunteer military force and has no intention to reinstate the draft. Instead, the White House hopes to demonstrate gender equality in the armed services and to foster a sense of public service by requiring women to register.

Headline is misleading.

We haven’t had a ‘draft’ in decades.

I must have missed the part where Obama served in the military. Or even registered for the draft...

One of Trump’s first acts in January has to be to have the Pentagon PERFUMED PRINCES who support Obama with this idea PROMPLY REMOVED TO SOMEPLACE WHERE THEY CANNOT FURTHER DAMAGE OUR NATION!

To be fair, why not eliminate men registering for the draft?

It's not like the gov't has any problem locating people -- IF they are people that the gov't actually wants to find.

Even if the US military needed a draft, it might not do much good.

There is a Supreme Court decision that states that the reason only men have to register for the draft is because only men could serve in frontline combat units.

This is no longer the case, so in the interests of fairness, women should be required to register for the draft.

If they don’t like it, they should have thought about that before demanding to be let into frontline combat units. Equal rights means equal responsibilities.

I think there’s a difference between Selective Service registration, and a ‘draft’.

And as a woman....I get where he’s coming from. Women DO NOT need to be in battle. They can help in so many other ways. My MIL drove supply trucks in WW2 in England.

That’s the other thing - if women can serve in combat units and don’t have to register for the draft, men should not be required to either.

No...I believe the point of the registration is to select people to be drafted.

Selective Service *is* “the draft” with a nice PC name and the promise that a draft will only occur in time of war or national emergency.

What’s the difference?

If there’s a draft, you’re signed up for it. Right?

6 of one; half a dozen of the other.
