Senators say Trump can immediately issue executive orders to curb sanctuary cities

In the immediate aftermath of the election, mayors from some of America's largest cities told Donald Trump that they would not comply with any of his planned efforts to shut down their so-called sanctuary cities and they would not enforce federal immigration law.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said his city is “not going to sacrifice a half million people who live among us" by turning them over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Chicago Mayor and former Barack Obama chief of staff, Rahm Emmanuel reassured illegal immigrants that despite their post-election anxieties “you are safe in Chicago.”

The sentiment was echoed by mayors and local officials in other major sanctuary cities across the country including Seattle, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Santa Fe, N.M., Austin, Tex., Denver, Col. and others.

This defiance was prompted by the high likelihood that Donald Trump will make good on his campaign promise to end sanctuary cities, cut federal law enforcement funding to cities that do not cooperate with ICE, and triple the number of immigration enforcement agents.

According to the Center for Immigration Studies, there are approximately 300 jurisdictions that have sanctuary policies, a number that has increased under the Obama administration. Jessica Vaughan, the director of policy studies at the Center, classifies a sanctuary as any jurisdiction that has a policy, law, or ordinance that actively obstructs immigration enforcement or shields illegal aliens from detection.

According to Vaughan, aside from violations of federal law, the practical effect of the sanctuary policies "is a public safety matter."

They’ve rejected a state income tax twice, both times by large margins.

I think they mean immediately after swearing in, like first day EOs

Of course they did, but stop spoiling some deliberate misunderstanding rants. It's fun.

Thanks, didn’t know that; so it’s taxes that they think others will pay that they like, right?

As the old saying goes, “Don’t tax him, don’t tax me, tax the guy behind the tree.”

Elected officials—or any officials—complicit must serve jail time and pay heavy personal fines. That’s the only way to make them obey the laws.

It will take huge problems to dethrone the Democrats. All’s fair in love and war and this is war to return America to law and order!

So, the cities elected their mayors so let them pay for it. The mayors won’t last long and neither will the sanctuary when there is no money to fund it.

My guess is that these large cities that are run by liberal democrats have to have huge amounts of federal funds to handle all the handouts they give...

...

I think the pensions and other generous benefits they use to buy votes are a greater burden.

Sadly the cities and state will raise taxes on many who did not vote for these losers. Its the illegals who vote for them and they don’t pay taxes so they don’t care. The middle class are the ones hurt most but their votes don’t outnumber the voter fraud and illegal and criminal votes (esp in CA)

What we don’t know is how it will be enforced. Sanctions may not be enough. These cities have too much pride and a federal heavy handed approach may look bad.

I look at it more of a Feds against Capone/Mob deal.

Take away their money for illegal activities and their citizens will soon tire of the bravado.....prosecute those that actively break Federal immigration laws and others will reconsider.

You broke the code! This has been a nonsensical argument to try and BS the populace into thinking this is an important LE aid. You keep illegals from being identified and removed, and you keep your crime rate higher than it would be otherwise.

““Simple. Charge DeBlasio with felony aiding, abetting and harboring illegal aliens. Issue an arrest warrant THEN ARREST HIM AND ANYONE ELSE WHO ATTEMPTS TO THWART HIS ARREST.””

The way DeBlabio has treated the NYPD, I doubt that there would be “anyone else attempting to thwart his arrest!”

“The down side is if federal funding is cut, they will just raise taxes on the citizens to make up for it.”

And you see something wrong with that? I mean the “citizens” elected the people who are promulgating the sanctuary city policies, so why shouldn’t they bear the costs of the illegal acts of those that they have elected? Justice in places like San Francisco is going to be painful. I like that, and I was born in SF.

How do you keep these people who are in the sanctuary cities from running like scared rats into other towns where they can disappear into the woodwork? perhaps they will starve themselves out but if they return home to Mexico or whatever they probably don’t have any income there either. I can see crime rising as a result in these other cities.
