To: Volunteer

The point is that blacks just do not seem to WANT to do the
“vacation” thing. We started going to the Smokies over 50
yrs. ago; saw zero black people & NOT because there were any
signs banning them either. THAT hasn’t changed; and we can’t
force them to enjoy the mountains if they don’t wish to go
there. Their loss. The houses there are largely modest to
average. We have rented cabins & chalets; now we stay in
a motel in Townsend near the “Loop” where early settlers
lived at one time. Townsend is more affordable. Up until
just a few years ago, the same elderly lady made lots of
homemade biscuits every day for breakfast at a local diner
where the locals generally have breakfast.

The drive is too hard on us now.:o(

We were in Gatlinburg in October and we sat on a bench and watched people. Not one black. I told my daughter I didn’t understand why there were no blacks visiting.

We were in Myrtle Beach in June and a lot of black people vacation there. I guess they don’t like the mountains.
