The end has come for a popular Grand Rapids restaurant known as much for its creative vegan dishes as its progressive business model.
For much of its five-year existence, the eatery went by the moniker Bartertown Diner, until it was rebranded in September to The Garden Diner and Cafe.
The offbeat 30-seat eatery announced this month that its last day would be Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Popular!? Then why are they out of business?
Just another vegan / socialism fail.

I think the restaurants in Guam have a no-tipping policy.
The Wobblies? Didn't know these guys were still around. The fact employees were "expected" to join this far left union shows how radical the policies were.
Well, they didn’t in 1947 when I went there as a wee baby. I think I was like 3 months old or something. ;-)
I see what you did there..............
Grand Rapids is the Conservative side of the state.
They should have done this in Ann Arbor.
Trump’s fault, of course. /s
Yes, BBQ would do well there, mainly because of the very high ceilings in that restaurant. Look at the photo. I would think the same high ceilings would drive up the heating costs during winter months though. Perhaps that was a storage or manufacturing facility a long time ago.
I too was stunned to learn that the Wobblies were still around. They have a HQ in Chicago, and they are trying to organize Starbucks.
Maybe it was the Tofurkey with sprout stuffing...
Sounds like the big problem was service. 40 minutes to serve a veggie meal? I wonder if that’s tied to workers not having to hustle for tips. I’m all for any business model that works.
Two word in the death knell-vegan and progressive.
= = = = = = = = = = =
It gets harder but I do manage to skip the aisles in the grocery store that push Gluten free
OR most anything with the word HEALTH in it or GREEN
Just now getting over the jitters from the lack of MSG in my system...(when ‘they’ first mentioned MSG I was always thinking Madison Square Garden).
Health(y) Food has NO BUSINESS in a grocery store..
Of course a lot of those that push that off the wall crapola believe that everything on the shelves is stored in the ‘back room’, so no need for trucks etc to deliver it...
I know this place! Never ate there.
It was such a pretensions joint from the looks of it. Lots of hipster types hanging around outside.
Contrast that to the Thai and Chinese food restaurants across the street that are family-run. On some evenings I would see the kids or grand kids of the the Chinese establishment’s owners doing their homework, and enjoying a meal, while the family cleaned up for the evening.
One place embodies real American work ethic and family togetherness, the other is full of privilege white kids worshiping mass-murders. And now that place is out of business.
I’m in Grand Rapids 5 - 6 times a year. Never heard of the place. We hit Hopcat, The Bob and Brewery Vivant quite a bit.
Yeah, and he knew the difference between a “death knell” and a “death nail.”
Hmmmm. Death nail. Time to head to the garage for a smoke break.
gluten free isnt about being a health nut, some folks have food allergies.
some people may think they are being more healthy eating gluten free, but they are not - those folks are not doing it because they have allergies/gut issues.
I'd never heard of them as either the Bartertown Diner or The Garden Diner and Cafe.
I think they should open up in Venezuela. Maybe Cuba.
YET, the lessons of their communist utopia restaurant will never be learned. Communism requires lots and lots of guns to keep the kulaks in line. The ONLY way this restaurant could possibly stay open is if they had squads of murderes forcing people to eat there.
Two ideologies enter, one ideology leaves.
