Congress approves biggest pay raise for military in six years

Congress has overridden President Obama’s objection to Congress’ annual defense bill, giving the troops a 2.1% pay raise and a boost in manpower.

Released on Tuesday, the bill also includes a massive overhaul of the military healthcare system but spares military personnel the dreaded cuts in housing allowance that were the subject of much debate earlier in the year.

At $3.2 billion more than President Obama’s target cost, the NDAA is set to total nearly $619 billion.

President Obama has said that he won’t accept increases in defense spending without corresponding increases in non-military programs, risking a snubbing of a military workforce who feels largely uncompensated and subject to a slipping quality of life.

Agreeing with President Obama, Maryland Congressman Steny H. Hoyer said, “I am disappointed that the Administration did not use its authority to provide for an average 2.1% pay raise in 2017 for federal civilian employees, which would establish parity with the 2017 raise for military personnel serving in non-combat areas that Congress is expected to include in the FY2017 defense authorization bill.”

With the approval of the NDAA, 2017 will be the first time in six years that the military receives a pay raise over two percent. . .

Typical. Congress gives a stingy 2.1% to the people who protect the country. That will equate to about $15 a paycheck.

He gave them a 14% raise the following year.

Here’s a chart for the next 30 years. It’s been very slim after Reagan.

The money we save not paying for Michelle’s vacations and separate jumbo jet should offset it.

Keep in mind that Obama stiffed Fed workers for 3 years. Zero pay raise 3 years in a row. As much as everyone dislikes Fed workers. That’s a long time to go.

Agree. They are way underpaid. Reagan knew that and gave them proper respect.

Got a huge pay raise in 1972 from Nixon.I think it was 10.9% I was an E-4 and my pay doubled. The lower the rank the higher the raise. I also remember the big raise under Reagan. Democrats never gave us squat. They hate the military and that’s why I’ve have never voted for a democrat in my life, at the local level or higher. And never will.

Incredible. Even if you double that for today’s inflation- it’s still not enough to live on. Thank you for your service and sacrifices.

Well, good they are getting a pay raise finally. Would have preferred to see it also raise for those years they did not receive any.

Even with variable housing allowances you had to get 3 squids together to afford rent

***Not quite the 11% Reagan gave them but it’s a start.****

We don’t have Jimmy Carter’s 21% inflation rate to compensate for as Reagan did.
