The time has come for a school of growing up

She and a friend would run sessions teaching room painting, chicken roasting, savings accounts, engine maintenance. I rolled my eyes (I’d prefer “engaged thoughtfully”), but lo, it’s happened. In Portland, a teacher and psychotherapist have opened The Adulting School.

Adulting. It was nominated as the word of the year by the American Dialect Society, a word coined by a generation that has been shielded from the worst of growing up by living in their parents’ homes, and shut out of the best of it by a society that forces them to stay there. Reminiscent of Alan Partridge’s seminal boast that he’s been “pubic for 31 years”, “adulting”, the verb, is most commonly used to gloat over achievements such as making a dentist appointment, or going to Tesco and buying more than just Frosties.

I thought the term “high school” was the term used for such a school, but I guess I’ve been misinformed.

There is one - it’s called basic training, and it is run by all branches of the military.

Its not just kids. A lot of adults in their 30s, 40s, 50s and even 60s are giant babies who want to do whatever they want without consequences while a Mommy & Daddy government take care of them. The Welfare State has gradually destroyed our citizens’ independence, turned “work” into a bad word and made living of the dole acceptable. These adult babies had better grow up because at a certain point, the whole “cradle to grave” welfare Ponzi scheme is going to blow up and then all of them will be subjected to the most brutal “Adult School” around — poverty and economic depression with no government to hand them welfare and food stamps.

I had one of these work for me. He carried a backpack with him at all times with his “must haves” in it. These included his journal, water bottle, and iPad. He once took a half day of sick leave because he was overwrought that an earwig crawled into his hat and bit him on his head. He wasn’t hurt, just overwrought and too weirded out to concentrate on his job (his words). When we interviewed him, we asked him if he had ever done any type of financial work. Because one of my colleagues knew he was weak in this area, she softballed the question and extended that to even doing a family budget or balancing a checkbook. His answer was “Isn’t that what your wife is for?” We asked him what his weakness was, and he said he tended to be really forgetful. Turned out to be an understatement, he had the attention span of a goldfish! And my colleagues overrode my strenuous objections and hired this precious snowflake. He lasted about 7 months.

High school Education has been destroyed ever since vocational training was removed.
