AP: Darrell Issa finally wins House race
Hotair ^ | 11/29/2016 | Ed Morrissey

Posted on 11/29/2016 11:21:24 AM PST by SeekAndFind

It took three weeks to confirm it, thanks to California’s excruciatingly slow ballot counts, but Darrell Issa will return to Congress in January. Democrats had targeted his seat in order to push out one of the most conservative Republicans in the House, and to send a message to Barack Obama’s critics. Instead, Issa managed to eke out a narrow win over Doug Applegate in the toughest race of his career.

Note, though, the way the Associated Press leads this story as it calls the race for Issa:

The wealthiest member of Congress is keeping his job.

Republican Darrell Issa narrowly defeated Marine-turned-lawyer Doug Applegate after a bitter contest in in the 49th District north of San Diego.

Unofficial returns Monday showed Issa holding a 2,348-vote edge, with only a small number of votes left to tally. Vote-counting extended for weeks after the election as officials tallied late-arriving mail ballots and those filled out at polling places.

That’s the big takeaway — that Issa’s the wealthiest House member? Yes, I’m sure that’s why Nancy Pelosi had Democrats target him. She’s worth an estimated $100 million, a figure that has grown rapidly over the last few years. How many leads from the AP on Pelosi stories start off with that factoid? Or how about Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO), whose net worth on this list outstrips Issa’s?

That aside, Issa had better be prepared for tough races in the future. The current Cook Partisan Voting Index rating for CA-49 is R+4, but a growing Hispanic community in San Diego’s northern coastal region will keep presenting more challenges. In his previous four runs, Issa never scored below 58% of the general-election vote. This time he barely got a majority in the state’s single-pool primary over Applegate and independent Ryan Glenn Wingo, which presaged this close general-election outcome.

Applegate has yet to concede the race. He could ask for a recount, but the 2,348 vote gap is too large for a recount to overcome. Besides, it took California this long to do the actual count — how much longer would a recount take? It’s more likely that Applegate will use his resources for another run at Issa, but the midterm turnout model should give the Republican incumbent a slightly easier run in two years. After that, the future looks murkier in this leans-GOP district.

I think the main reason this race was competitive is that California Republicans had few reasons to go to the polls in 2016 because everyone knew Hillary was going to carry the state and the Senate race was a non-starter in that it was essentially a runoff between two Dems. I think that’s one of the main reasons Trump did so poorly in California and thus inflated Hillary’s lead. That and the strong likelihood of illegals and non-citizens being allowed to vote.

The State Board of Canvassers did. When is AP going to admit it?

I’m in Issa’s district in SD county ty. The other guy had military experience. Also ISSA supported Trump. This IS Cal even though we have more military than most. The fact that Issa survived when Cal went overwhelmingly democrat (name doesn’t help either) is a triumph.

You're exactly right. Our daughter still lives in Issa's district and is a Trump supporter, but I could not convince her to vote this year. She is 40 years old and said her vote wouldn't count because there was no way Trump had a chance in CA.

She called on us the day after the election and said her office was full of crying, bewildered people who couldn't believe what happened.

And I thought there was no possible way Crist would win

Pinellas is his back yard. Not that I voted for him, but he actually got out there and talked to the people one on one in his district. People in Pinellas like Crist and think he was an OK governor. There were a few Trump and Crist signs in the same yard in my hood.

Check this out from mid October:
Poll: Charlie Crist blowing away David Jolly

I trashed your last request.

I’m trashing this one too.

I actually considered it. If I hadn’t already sent out $32 million, I probably would have been more receptive.

LOL

And if you believe this...

I gave some, but it wasn’t significant by any stretch of the imagination.

Issa was saved by the south Orange County portion of his district. He lost in San Diego County, but won OC by over 16,000 votes.

I’m wondering how a marine votes for Hillary Clinton.

Oh yeah, he turned into a lawyer.

I’m glad he won, but I’m really sick and tired of folks sending me notes starting with: “Dear Friend;” and ending with, “(10), (25), (50), (100), (250), (500), or write in a larger amount.”

I get a bunch of those. Most of 'em come from a guy named Donald ...

We just need to set up “The Doughty One Foundation”.

OK, so you become Secretary of State, dodge sniper fire, call Benghazi terrorist attacks as nothing, and then later run for President.

All the while laundering money from foreign governments, domestic companies, foreign companies through the “foundation”.

Oh, and you’ll need your own private email server. Put it in your bathroom. Make sure the Delete key works repeatedly.

You’ll need to switch to “Democrat” and then you’ll have hundreds of millions of dollars to play with!! Easy!!

Be very careful about that.

Since the election I have received only one from Trump.

There are a bunch of knock offs using names like Eric to sucker folks in, and claiming support will help Trump.

When you look closer, these are not Trump organizations.

These are PACS, and they are trying to cash in on Trump’s popularity.

I wouldn’t sent them a dime.
