Of course if Atlanta had not fallen Lincoln's electoral college vote would have been lower...Lincoln was afraid he would be defeated. So perhaps he owed his victory to Jefferson Davis for replacing Joseph Johnston with John Bell Hood.

Tomorrow is the anniversary of John Bell Hood's disaster at Franklin, Tennessee, and of the death of Patrick Cleburne.
