Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is pledging to ban sanctuary cities in his state as other governors and mayors promise to continue sheltering illegal immigrants.
"I'm going to sign a law that bans sanctuary cities," Abbott tweeted on Sunday.
"Also I've already issued an order cutting funding to sanctuary cities."
Abbott was responding to a Twitter user who questioned whether the Texas governor could do anything to reverse Austin's pledge to remain a sanctuary city. During his presidential campaign, President-elect Donald Trump pledged to deport millions of immigrants.
He said during an interview shortly after his victory he would prioritize deporting or jailing any undocumented immigrants who were members of gangs or had criminal records.
He also vowed during the campaign to block federal dollars from cities that give sanctuary to undocumented immigrants.
Democratic governors and mayors signaled earlier this month that they aren't prepared to go along with the Trump administration's plans.
Municipal executives taking the position that they will continue to aid and abet lawlessness is an unsustainable method of local government.
Trump came along just in time. It’s a shame he didn’t run in `08.
As we have said here on FR countless times, if a homeowner stops leaving milk in the fridge so that crazy great-aunt Tess can no longer feed the swarms of stray cats that come to the back stoop, and so that the cats go someplace else ... problem solved.
Where do they go? Who cares? As long as they leave. 52 days.
>>I believe one of the things that make sanctuary cities sanctuary cities is that the don’t inquire as to whether a person is an illegal alien or not. So they don’t know whether to turn them over to ICE.<<
The new laws could require them to determine it OR contact ICE and have ICE determine it.
There would be both Federal AND State edicts to do so and failing to do so would be a crime.
I live in native NY because I could not get and keep a job in San Antonio without speaking Spanish. In my field. People here don’t believe me. Their eyes glaze over. I’m paying 1600$ Out of paycheck up here per month to the IRS to work here. I would NOT do that if I didn’t have to. Oh well. At least here at work when I ask if anyone wants a cup of kwaffee, they just say, “yeah.” No, “whoa!! Say that again!”
Before November all this would have done was draw another lawsuit from Barry's DOJ.
I have always made it a point in life to stay away from Walmart. Especially in San Antonio I’ve been to Walmart less than ten times. No lie.
My only question is why in the Hell haven’t the 2/3rds of the states that are dominated by Republicans been pushing this for the past 8 years???? This is the problem with the Republican Party. Conservative states like Texas are just getting around to punishing their “sanctuary” cities. And what about all the totalitarian nonsense on campuses? Can’t these states pull funding from them too?
I hollered back "Viva Los Estados Unidos!". A few family members expected a rumble to start, but I laughed it off. Next thing I knew, the other group packed up their stuff and left.
Pass the new laws and then if the cities still refuse to follow them then the governor can do whatever he wants.
Ban them?
What about arresting the mayors, city councils and anyone connected with supporting this illegal revolution against the laws of the United States.
I pray that that’s a metaphor for what’s about to happen on a huge (yuge?) scale. All we ever had to do was stand up for ourselves, and not have our “own” government opposing us for doing so, much less supporting the law.
List of Texas Sanctuary Cities:
From http://sanctuarycities.info/sanctuary_state_texas.htm
Austin, Texas
Baytown, Texas
Brownsville, Texas
Channelview, Texas
Denton, Texas
Dallas, Texas
El Cenizo, Texas
Ft. Worth, Texas
Houston, Texas
Katy, Texas
Laredo, Texas
League City, Texas
Mcallen, Texas
Port Arthur, Texas
San Antonio, Texas
I live here in San Antonio and most of what is being posted in this thread is patently false. Yes there are pockets that may resemble Mexico, but few and far between. English is just fine anywhere and remains the dominant language here. Does it help to be bilingual? Sure. Required? Not at all. And it is not a sanctuary city.
We drove the southern route through Texas last year across I-10. El Paso, Brownville, Laredo and the entire valley is almost totally Mexico. Heading north up 59 same way until just south of Victoria. Add Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio, maybe Corpus to that mix. Lots of cities should receive no funding from the state or feds. Going to be an interesting legislative term in January for Texas. Somebody is going to have to get rid of Strauss.
Pasadena, Texas, also needs to go on that list.
Good point!

Yep, very active in Boy Scouts and work fulltime here as a scientist. Living here in San Antonio for the last 12 years. So, yes I get out a lot.
