Sad but true. While working at a bank in the 70s... I met a groundskeeper who'd fled from Cuba. He and his family were very prominent there when Castro came to power. They were stripped of their businesses and assets...then all imprisoned. He almost starved to death until a friend in the U.S. paid a ransom and brought him here. He never knew the fate of his parents or siblings. I will never forget the stories he told of the years he spent in prison... fighting other prisoners for rats and bugs to eat. Castro was a monster.
Note to all politicians.... if we ever go the way of communism.... you'll be the first to be exterminated and/or disposed of.
A friend from work is Cuban. His Grandfather had some part in the Bay of Pigs and I think the family home in Cuba was stolen and is now an embassy or some other government building.
As soon as I heard about Castro, I texted him my congratulations.
I grew up in central Florida in the 60s and 70s. Virtually all of my Hispanic friends were Cubans whose families had escaped. The most difficult story to listen to was from one of my father’s good friends. He, his sister, and his uncle were the only three of his family who escaped alive. His parents, grandparents, and brothers were all executed in cold blood. One was killed by a car bomb, and the others were shot. He wept awfully as he recounted his family’s tragedy. It’s a horrific story.
I’m waiting for Raul to go next. Nothing will change until he is dead too.
