Meet Canada's First Hijab-Wearing TV News Anchor
Hollywood Reporter ^ | 11/23/2016 | Etan Vlessing

Canada suddenly has its first hijab-wearing news anchor on commercial television.

"For me, it's just a step forward in my career," Ginella Massa, who jumped at the chance to fill a vacant anchor chair at the CityNews network in Toronto last Friday night, tells The Hollywood Reporter. But when Massa ended the 11 p.m. newscast just before midnight and checked in with her assignment editor, they agreed that Canada also had taken an even bigger leap forward for diversity.

"He said, 'Was that a first?' And I said, 'Yes, I think it was,' to have a woman in a hijab anchor the news in Canada," she recalls. So Massa marked her career milestone on her Twitter account and on Facebook, where she wrote: "That's a wrap! Thankful to have opportunities like this at a time when there is so much hate and vilifying of Muslims."

Her smartphone hasn't stopped buzzing since. "People started to go, 'Wow, that's amazing that we haven't already had this in Canada,'" she adds. Massa hopes this is the last time Canadians do a double-take over her religious headscarf.

"It shouldn't be a big deal," she says. But Massa wearing a hijab hosting a major network newscast has become a big deal in the wake of Donald Trump's U.S. presidential win.

A backlash online was immediate, if only from a vocal minority.

"Hatred does exist. I've seen it firsthand: on my Twitter timeline, in the comment sections of articles written about me," says Massa, suddenly finding herself in unchartered terrain for broadcasters. She adds the square of cloth covering her head is far more than a fashion statement.

It's a symbol of faith, deeply personal, and yet outwardly showing on air.

Will they be as happy when sharia comes to take their heads? What will the look on their faces be when that happens?

What is the purpose of showing a news reader in a sack on television? Might as well have off screen narration. And, with off screen narration, the voiceover might as well be electronic. Siri is pretty good, with English likely better than a jihad-enabler in a sack.

Qur’an 33-59. O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women, (3764) that they should cast their outer garments over (3765) their persons: that is most convenient, that they should be known (3766) and not molested.

3764 This is for all Muslim women, those of the Prophet's household, as well as the others. They were asked to cover themselves with outer garments when walking around.

3765 Jilbab, plural Jalabib: an outer garment: a long gown covering the whole body, or a cloak covering the neck and bosom.

3766 The object was not to restrict the liberty of women but to protect them from harm and molestation. *The Meaning of The Noble Qur’an, Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani, http://www.islamicbookstore.com/b9460.html

VIRGINIA SLIM cigarettes and hijabs? Interesting use of a cigarette jingle.

NOT voting was REAL. Lung cancer from cigarettes was REAL. Not to worry. I know my gender.

It's my GUESS that after wearing said hijab for a generation those daughters of hijabbers will simply NOT wear them. Their usage will fade away, just like all the cigarette ads.

People still smoke, though, don't they, no matter HOW many dying, raspy, croaky lung cancer people the boobus-toobus shows?

Just sayin'

Some day she'll bring dishonor to her family...or her husband's family...and she'll be murdered.

Studio lighting technician: “Hi, Ginella. You been on
assignment? Haven’t seen you around here, lately.”

Ginella: “No, I just took some time off to have my genitals
hacked up and attend a family honor killing funeral or two.”

"The Glorious Quran"
Surah (Chapter) IV, verse 125:
Who is better in religion than he who surrendereth his purpose to Allah while doing good (to men) and followeth the tradition of Abraham, the upright? Allah (Himself) chose Abraham for Friend.

You must have spent some time in the middle east, I suppose. We spent five years there in the KSA (Aramco). A Quran was a gift to my husband from one of the Saudi contractors.

There are STILL some places in Africa where female genitalia are cut off. It's part of their culture which preceded their current faith, Islam or animist. Apparently it's been around so long that they tried to make their faith fit into their culture.
BARBARIC!

The Saudi mamas who visit the local elementary to see their children show up totally covered. No photos of them are allowed. But it is fine to photograph the dads and children. There are other Muslim mamas who dress as they wish. And some who wear a bit of garb. But can you imagine a Mennonite female news anchor?

I’ve visited the UAE (Saudi Arabia’s kid brother) several times. To see women walking around in black burlap sacks is like watching living ghosts. To this day it unnerves me to an extent that would be hard to exaggerate.

I marvel at the juxtaposition of progressive celebration with the most illiberal of human societies.
