Conway: Trump backers feel 'betrayed' by Romney consideration
CNN ^ | 11/27/2016 | Tom LoBianco

One of President-elect Donald Trump's top advisers said Sunday that his loyal supporters across the country feel "betrayed" that he is considering one of his most vicious critics, Mitt Romney, for secretary of state. "I'm all for party unity, but I'm not sure we have to pay for that with secretary of state position," Kellyanne Conway, Trump's campaign manager, told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union." She added: "It's just breathtaking in scope and intensity the type of messages I've received from all over the country ... the number of people who feel betrayed to think that Gov. Romney would get the most prominent Cabinet post after he went so far out of his way to hurt Donald Trump."

Conway first opened a window on the infighting in Trump's transition over who should win the powerful role as the nation's top diplomat, when she tweeted on Thanksgiving about concerns with Romney. "Receiving deluge of social media & private comms re: Romney Some Trump loyalists warn against Romney as sec of state," she tweeted, including a link to a Politico story.

I think at best Romney will get an ambassadorship, or tasked to fix the VA. Romney knows how to fix things, and the VA is a high priority thing to get fixed.

You would have to be insane if you thought by passing over Romney would be being betrayed...

Who would ever in their right minds even consider this POS idiot for anything other that ‘toilet scrubber’!!!

Trump has better sense than this, this was a ‘fake news’ piece, one of just many to come, and remember the news thinks everyone and their dogs that show up on Trump’s doorstep is there for a ‘position’...they cannot believe they are being able to ‘pick his cabinet’ or ‘know who is doing what’...poor slobs!!!

How does Romney have so much power? He was a one term governor who has been out of office for almost 10 years?

Money talks. BS walks. Romney is still wired into the country club wing of the GOP and has an extensive donor network loyal to him.

It won't be Romney. Kellyanne would not be debating the choice on Twitter without Trump's OK.

It's a way of giving mittens a chance to withdraw before the selection is announced.

“How does Romney have so much power?”

Money. The GOP donors love him. Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell probably asked Trump to name him SOS and Trump is looking for a way to get out of that.

Force him into a public apology. Then tell him to stick it.

Of course his supporters feel betrayed. Trump gained no ground with this stunt. Same with calling Obummer a great man and not wanting to hurt the Clintons.

The Mittens drama is keeping Romney tied up and quiet.

************

I disagree. He is not sidelined by this at all. To the contrary, Romney’s image is being restored by this delayed process. He’s being given undeserved respectability and credibility. And he is back in the news in a way that is positive for him, even if he’s not selected. Mittens is arising from the ashes thanks to Trump.

I wish Ms Conway would be more private about all this inside baseball. The gratuitous exhibitionism of a Reality Showman is evident. The public doesn’t need to observe, scene by scene, how the sausage is going to be made. Just make the decisions, and be quick about it! This ‘dirty laundry display’ only helps to educate Donald’s enemies in how his Administration is going to operate.

I agree. I don’t like all this Trump softness turn about on what he said during the election. Obama and Hillary are exactly what he said they were, but now all of a sudden he’s taken on a kinder and gentler attitude toward them. They haven’t changed on bit; why should he?

Had they won, the Democrats would have ground our noses in the defeat. There would have been no magnanimity. No mercy. No quarter.

Feh. If Trump is considering him, he has his reasons. Whether it’s for show or because he has something to bring to the table that outweighs other considerations. Trump is there. Trump is going to be Trump. I have no idea what that is going to be, but it’ll be better thanHillary, and certainly couldn’t be worse.

You are exactly correct! Romney is plugged in to some really high $$ folks. Nationwide. A donor list that would be the envy of any politician, Dem or Rep.

But of course that alone does not qualify him for a cabinet position. I suggested the other day maybe he should head GSA? General Services Administration. You know, selling used cars, government surplus, etc.

I can’t stand Romney, but as long as Trump follows through on The Wall and deportations, anti-Muslim actions and economic and military strength I can put up with a little stink. After all, Trump isn’t afraid to fire people.

Nail meet coffin.

Conway also questioned Romney’s credentials for the job.

“Gov. Romney in the last four years, I mean, has he been around the globe doing something on behalf of the United State of which we’re unaware? Did he go and intervene in Syria where they’re having a massive humanitarian crisis?” Conway asked. “Has he been helpful to Mr. Netanyahu?”

Conway’s comments continued the public bashing of Romney that has been playing out, with top surrogates like Mike Huckabee and Newt Gingrich also going after the former Massachusetts governor. The spectacle has made it less likely that Romney will land at Foggy Bottom come January.

“I’m all for party unity, but I’m not sure that we have to pay for that with the Secretary of State position,” Conway said. “We don’t even know if Mitt Romney voted for Donald Trump.”

And she wasn’t done yet.

Later, on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Conway continued to make the case against Romney.

“People feel betrayed to think that Governor Romney, who went out of his way to question the character and the intellect and the integrity of Donald Trump, now our president-elect, would be given the most significant cabinet post of all, Secretary of State,” Conway told host Chuck Todd.

“They feel a bit betrayed that you can get a Romney back in there after everything he did.”

I think she would prefer it that way too. But she’s showing understandable signs of frustration and probably senses that Trump’s presidency would be damaged by a disloyal Romney. Ms. Conway evidently feels strongly enough to go public.

That is very worrisome with respect to some of the things going on in the inner circle as it is indicative of GOPe undercurrents.

You think Trump should have been sparky after winning? As President-elect he has no power or leverage. He’s simply playing the waiting game until he’s inaugurated, then he can haul ass.
