I have to wonder what the reading proficiency statistics are for Asian third graders. They’re a minority (about 33% in SF) but probably achieve at an significantly higher level than even the “white” students due to the value their culture places on education.

Re Asian first graders...Your point is well taken. For most children, good schooling won't matter if the parents don't place a high value on education and if discipline isn't instilled at home. I thought Ben Carson would have made a good secretary of education because he's a real-life example of the success that can follow when education is valued.

My son's college roommate at UCLA was the child of Vietnamese immigrants who came to this country not speaking a word of English. He's now an oncologist.
