Fidel was a true believer in Fidel, and that’s it. The Communist in the family was Raul, and he preferred Chinese Communism as did Che. The Soviets didn’t like them and they didn’t like the Soviets, but they had a common enemy.
Castro’s nationalism was explicitly anti-American. Its really a family dictatorship but unlike the Kims in North Korea, the Castros apart from Raul - have no immediate heir apparent to the throne.
After Raul retires, the Communist Party will probably revert to a collective leadership.
