Kellyanne Conway, President-elect Trump’s campaign manager, is publicly discouraging her boss from naming Mitt Romney as secretary of state.
Conway, a top transition adviser to Trump, tweeted Thursday that she’s receiving a “deluge” of comments about Romney — and then linked to a Politico story about Trump loyalists opposing the former Massachusetts governor’s nomination.
“Receiving deluge of social media & private comms re: Romney Some Trump loyalists warn against Romney as sec of state,” Conway tweeted.
In a follow-up tweet, she suggested that loyalty was an important criteria for the top diplomatic post.
“Kissinger & Schultz as Secs of State flew around the world less, counseled POTUS close to home more. And were loyal. Good checklist,” she said.
Conway’s public skepticism demonstatres the internal tug of war over the secretary of state’s slot. .
A Trump insider said Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner and Reince Priibus, the Republican National Committee chairman tapped to become the White House chief of staff, are pushing Romney.
But Trump senior counselor and strategist Stephen Bannon and Conway oppose Romney, a source familiar with the discussions said.
The other leading candidate is former Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
During the campaign, Romney was an outspoken critic of Trump, describing him as a “con artist” who was temperamentally unfit to be president.

I understand Priebus pushing Romney, but Kushner. NO.
Romney needs to be kept very far away from this admin.
I know the old adage about keeping friends close and enemies closer, but this would be stupid and dangerous.

To my mind, this election was about the complete and total rejection of the Romney/RINO Status Quo.
The GOPe takes/took us for granted much the same way the democommies used and abused Black Americans in this country for decades.
Both sides - the Uniparty - worked towards an end goal vastly different than what we want for us and our Country.
And this election was not only a bitch-slap at that train wreck in a Pants Suit, but a giant bitch slap at those supposedly on OUR side trying to ram their clowns down our throats (See: Bush, Jeb, Please Clap).
To bring Romney into this would be stupid and dangerous as well. He’s a stab in the back waiting to happen.
Same with McCain and the other worthless clowns.
Reince and Bannon are Trump’s good cop - bad cop pair.

Trump is masterful at ‘olive branching’ - but the SOS offering was too high - he should have gone with an advisory position on ‘religious freedom regulations needing attention’.
Keeping him close would be like Reagan keeping GHWB close.
But in Mitt Romney's case he has been neutralized by his well documented backstabbing of Trump and doesn't pose much of a threat now.
Back stabber Paul Ryan is a different story as Ryan still has power and is the House Majority leader and Trump will need him.
Get Mitt Romney away from the seat of Trump's power, he can't be trusted. Don't appoint Mitt to anything. -Tom ,
RE olive branching:
While I completely agree with that, there’s some people you just don’t offer an olive branch to.
You cut a length of Hickory Switch for them... and then USE it.
That is, even if he's intellectually qualified via his stances, he's not man enough. There is no greater lesson from this election. It's not enough to be merely intellectually correct. There is a quality that has nothing to do with concepts and intellect. Trump has it, Kellyanne has it, Rudy has it, so do many others.
It is a quality which means even though you can be wrong intellectually 30% of the time, you still do freedom more good that a Mitt can even if he were right 100%. But we don't even know what Mitt believes, and nor does he. So he is twice 100% disqualified.
Maybe...
But I do not recall GHWB publically bashing and trashing Reagan at every opportunity.
I suspected Rinse was behind Minion and that Bannon opposed. Did not know Conway’s preference.
Kellyanne is a politically brilliant patriot. Trump should have listened to her re: Mitt by now.
Because she’s been trying to change his mind internally and off-the-record for a week now, but it’s not working?
