Small Businesses Lament There Are Too Few Mexicans in U.S., Not Too Many

n Dallas, the King of Texas Roofing Co. says it has turned down $20 million worth of projects in the past two years because it doesn’t have enough workers.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, Joe Hargrave is expanding his successful Tacolicious chain of restaurants, but says he is building smaller ones due to “a massive shortage of restaurant workers.”

And in Florida, Steve Johnson, who harvests oranges for the citrus industry, says, “Right now, if I had 80 guys, I could put every one of them to work.”

As hiring accelerates and the labor market tightens thanks to a steady U.S. recovery, employers who need low-skilled workers are increasingly struggling to fill vacancies. One big reason: Mexican workers, who form the labor backbone of industries like hospitality, construction and agriculture, are in short supply.

[snip]

Many business owners who rely on low-skilled labor say the real trouble is too few Mexicans heading north, not too many. “Without Mexican labor our industry is at a standstill,” says Nelson Braddy Jr., the owner of King of Texas Roofing Co, which is helping build a sprawling new Toyota North American headquarters in a Dallas suburb. He says he would hire 60 roofers right away if he could find them. “It’s the worst I have seen in my career,” he adds.

Annual inflows of undocumented immigrants from Mexico have slowed to about 100,000 a year since 2009, from about 350,000 a year in the mid-2000s and more than half a million in the late 1990s and early 2000s, estimates the Pew Research Center. Apprehensions by the U.S. Border Patrol of Mexicans and other foreigners entering illegally declined to 337,117 last year, the least since 1971.

US citizens can earn more on welfare than they can working in construction.

End welfare, don’t mend it.

Sounds like a typical propaganda article for the pro-illegals.

We will see a lot of these types of articles between now and the final brick in the wall.

We can also expect to see more articles about homelessness and how the soaring stock market is hurting average Americans.

They are correct to a certain degree. American snowflakes don’t like hot and dirty jobs like roofing on 100 degree summer days, or picking fruit.

They also don’t like to show up every day on time, start at the lowest rung, do what they are told and stfu. Friend owned a machine shop and rarely was able to hire Mericans to train for good jobs. They were supposed to start as VPs.

Of course this isn’t always the case, but often enough to see patterns.

Why not? It would get them exercise and provide an outlet. It would also make them too exhausted to do riots and mouthing off to the guards.

There’s a TV show on Netflix `Canadian Border Patrol’ (?) where you can see how closely Canada grills foreigners at airports and crossings who claim to be just visiting but they suspect of coming to work. If they are deemed to have come to work, they are put back on a plane or in their cars and pointed south.
They don’t want foreigners without work permits coming in and taking jobs from Canadians.
There’s nothing we’re going to do that we didn’t do once, and that Canada and Mexico haven’t done all along; Mexico’s immigration laws and enforcement are severely draconian.

All that this: “I can’t get enough help!” stuff proves is that aliens here illegally go/are returned home, then get in line for work permits. There should be demand for them to come into the US legally with work permits, supervised by ICE. Documented, you know, to do “the jobs Americans won’t do”.
So let’s cut the “immigrant” BS. They’re here to work. If they want to apply for immigrant status, there’s a line for that as well. Those who broke our laws should be held ineligible.
Break our immigration laws once, no administrative trial date. A criminal trial and prison, then permanent deportation. Trump addressed this in his 28 points.

I think that was set in the Great Depression — I don’t know about today, how that would work out.

Pat Paulsen quotes (for the thread):

“I don’t want to say too much about illegal immigration. I’m afraid my views will be reported on the Cinco O’Clock News.”

“If either the right wing or the left wing gained control of the country, it would probably fly around in circles.”

A good many Americans who would normally do the type of jobs performed by illegals, (hard manual labor, low skilled, etc.) are content to live on the dole. Why sweat when Uncle Sugar sends out the cheese every month?

Oops, I’m reading that “Cool Hand Luke” was set in the 1950’s. Again, been too long since I saw it (one time).

They think that since their ancestors worked without being paid, they should make it even by getting paid without working.

And a (soon to be former) President who tells them that's the way it ought to be.

He will hire them at cut rate prices as subcontractors. They will have no insurance, no work comp and they won’t pay taxes. Illegal immigrants and those who take advantage of them are killing skilled trades.

If only they were LEGAL, you imbecile!

Too many illegals are illiterate.

90% of illegals engage in white collar crimes (fraud, etc)
Over 70% of illegals engage in criminal activities, from DUI manslaughter to drugs and outright murder.

Perhaps Small Businesses are willing to "overlook" those negatives.

Most of the rest of us are not!

How come black kids can’t pick up a hammer? And why isn’t the black community up in arms over illegal immigration?

I learned basic home repairs by working with my father. Unfortunately, too many black kids did not have that opportunity, through no fault of their own, just their irresponsible parents.

There are a lot of greedy small business owners and landlords that will look the other way when it comes to illegals. We have countless houses all over Cobb County with a dozen or more Mexican occupants.
