AFT President Randi Weingarten on Nomination of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education
American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO ^ | November 23, 2016 | AFT President Randi Weingarten

Posted on 11/23/2016 4:31:54 PM PST by mdittmar

WASHINGTON—In response to President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Betsy DeVos to lead the Department of Education, AFT President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement:

“The president-elect, in his selection of Betsy DeVos, has chosen the most ideological, anti-public education nominee put forward since President Carter created a Cabinet-level Department of Education.

“In nominating DeVos, Trump makes it loud and clear that his education policy will focus on privatizing, defunding and destroying public education in America.

“DeVos has no meaningful experience in the classroom or in our schools. The sum total of her involvement has been spending her family’s wealth in an effort to dismantle public education in Michigan. Every American should be concerned that she would impose her reckless and extreme ideology on the nation.

“We have an obligation to all children in America. That’s why we’ve fought to ensure that struggling schools get fixed, that we fight for kids to have the powerful learning, the social and emotional and wraparound services, and the great teachers they need. That’s why we fight for parents to have the voice they need and communities throughout the country to have the local decision-making for their schools and the investment they need, so we do everything we can to help all children have a great public education. What this pick means is far from ensuring that every child has the option of a great public education—the many who have it now will lose it. That’s been the experience of 25 years of privatizing: It helps very few, and many students now go to schools that have faced years of austerity and disinvestment.

“Betsy DeVos is everything Donald Trump said is wrong in America—an ultra-wealthy heiress who uses her money to game the system and push a special-interest agenda that is opposed by the majority of voters. Installing her in the Department of Education is the opposite of Trump’s promise to drain the swamp.”

The real problem is the government teacher’s unions. They will mess everything up, with or without Common Core

Kill common core and put states back in charge of its school systems and curricula and lets teach civics, American History and US Government. When I was in the 7th grade government class I got caught throwing spitballs and had to copy the US Constitution and all the amendments. At least it was all in my Government Book. Learned a lot and understand what I learned a lot more today.

She’s not a bad appointment,

Listen to the liberals. The more they cry, the better the appointment.

I love it when useless, lying commie teachers emit copious amounts of piss all over their diapers.

Common Core, Goals 2000, OBE... it’s all the same just a new name.

Teacher unions oppose CC because it impinges on their power. Citizens oppose CC because it’s centralized control. It’s amazing how many assume that since unions oppose DeVos it must be a good pick. DeVos has for three and a half years been a Board member of a CC promoting Bush organization.

Yes and no. They cry no matter what. It's good that they're crying, but they'd be crying if Trump appointed a lockstep educationalist establishmentarian, just because it was a Trump appointment.

No meaningful reform can happen without getting the Federal government out, in my opinion. The Federal government is much more susceptible to ideological whims and snits than are local school authorities who have to face local voters.

Dept of Ed also covers university financing. We’ve been throwing out so much money on useless snowflake majors.

That’s why we’ve fought to ensure that struggling schools get fixed, (which you've failed) that we fight for kids to have the powerful learning, indoctrination the social and emotional and wraparound services, (and the snowflakes you've produced) and the great teachers they need (bankrupting cities with union pension obligations).

I’m not a fan of the Devos family, in any respect, but am enjoying how much this nomination is unnerving the worst people.

I hope this new Ed. Dept. Secretary spends the first 18 months figuring out ways to transfer all monies and authority to the states and then in the next 18 months transform the Ed. Dept. into a sub department level entity by at least an 80% cut in size and budget and put the neutered remains into HHS for planned phase out ... And in the process destroy all aspects of Common Core....

“Teacher unions oppose CC..”

Sorry, but you need to do some homework if you believe teachers’ unions oppose Common Core:

Yep, it does come down to that. The TEACHERS, through their unions, are at the rut of the problem, and the ONLY way to break their backs is to cut off their direct government funding - or, as Jim Robinson said to me this morning: “Starve the Beast!”

If what has been protesting in the streets since Donald Trump’s election is any indication of the calibre of the ‘education’ being provided in public schools today, all I can say is: It’s About D*mnned Time!

“Every American should be concerned that she would impose her reckless and extreme ideology on the nation.”

Like teaching Constitutional principals free of political correctness.

Might even correct the history books to accurately and thoroughly document the Democrats promotion of Slavery throughout history.

I agree, except that the locals are as bad or worse because our “highly trained education professionals” are thoroughly propagandized while getting their so-called “education degrees”. The local yokels are a huge problem.
