Betsy DeVos, charter school advocate, is Donald Trump's pick for secretary of education

President-elect Donald Trump is set to nominate Betsy DeVos, a billionaire and school choice advocate, as his secretary of education.

"Betsy DeVos is a brilliant and passionate education advocate," Trump said in a statement Wednesday afternoon. "Under her leadership, we will reform the U.S. education system and break the bureaucracy that is holding our children back so that we can deliver world-class education and school choice to all families."

Official @realDonaldTrump statement re @BetsyDeVos for Education Secretary: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Cx92-bUWIAA6XDr.jpg:large DeVos is the former chair of the Michigan Republican Party and currently heads the American Federation for Children, which aggressively pushes for charter schools and voucher programs that let students go to private schools with taxpayer funds.

She and her husband, Dick DeVos — who together were worth more than $5 billion in 2012, according to Reuters — have funded initiatives to push for school voucher programs.

"The status quo in education is not acceptable," DeVos said in a statement. "Together, we can work to make transformational change that ensures every student in America has the opportunity to fulfill his or her highest potential."

Repeating here from WAPO:

The real issues are in the details:

“Despite all the concern, though, it seems unlikely that Trump can actually do anything to eliminate Common Core. Adoption and continued use of the standards is entirely controlled by state and local governments; while the Obama administration used stimulus funds to encourage Common Core’s adoption, those funds have been exhausted and nothing currently compels states to remain on Common Core. They all have the power to leave, and a few, such as Oklahoma, already have. Furthermore, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the current law governing education, prohibits the federal government from coercing states regarding the standards they use.”

“In order to root out Common Core, then, Trump would have to replace or ignore ESSA and intervene at the state level to get rid of Common Core. That would hardly comport with Trump’s rhetoric about having education controlled at the local level.”

********************

If this report is accurate, Common Core is no longer funded or assisted by the federal government. It’s now in the hands of the 40 states that use it. In other words, Common Core is now an issue for each individual state to decide.

So then the complaint here would be moot.

Perhaps De Vos was once a promoter for Common Core but as it looks now, she can no longer promote it. All President Trump has to do is not sign onto any budget item for Common Core.

De Vos’ last involvement in education was over choices that made education unions mad. That’s a good thing. Perhaps there might be a way for her to promote school choice. If she’s successful with that, she could then work on closing the Department down.

Trump has also made promises to the inner cities. They are in bad need of newer and safer facilities. That will take money. So the Education Dept will likely still have a role to play as he makes good on that campaign promise.

Conservatives should focus on getting rid of Common Core at the state level while ensuring the federal level earmarks no funds of any kind for Common Core. Conservatives should advocate sunsetting the Education Dept after it has served as a conduit to fund newer and safer school facilities in the inner cities.

Never heard of her. What’s the lowdown on this woman? Charter schools are good.

Where does she stand on Common Core?

She is the wife of Dick DeVos who once ran for governor in Michigan. Dick DeVos is the son of the founder of Amway. They are from the more conservative western side of our state.

The family is wealthy and very philanthropic.

I was hoping he would simply eliminate the DOE

The Government’s student loan program is simply turning less-qualified students into debt-slaves to the government, while feeding money to the leftist indoctrination mills that are most of our universities.

This cycle must be ended.

Trump screwed the pooch on this one.
More socialist brainwashing ahead. Get your friends with kids aware of the P-20 control plan, digital learning, tracking, testing and social emotional vs. fact-based learning-get them educated at home.
We cannot sustain freedom or the Trump anti-PC battle in the future if he signs up for this #$*%!!
Bad day for right-wingers. His transition team on ed sucked completely.

I posted this on a similar thread because it’s a bit of a twist:

I thought I read this info somewhere else but confirmed on wikipedia. Her brother is Erik Prince, yes that Erik Prince, founder of Blackwater. Interesting that Erik Prince came out of seclusion and made a pronouncement on November 4 that the NYPD was ready to make arrests because of info found on the Weiner computers. It was posted here:

There might be undercurrents on this nomination that we haven’t considered?

It’s time to closed the DofEd and cut taxes accordingly and let the states fund and control they’re own schools. No constitutional authority for the feds to control education

Disappointed. That horrible department sucks up tens of billions of dollars and doesn’t educate a single kid. It should be SHUT DOWN and stop meddling in what should be a purely local government issue. It is the primary reason school costs have soared 10X while kids are dumber than ever.

I remember that homeschoolers were upset with Cruz for writing in “Homeschoolers” as private ed for purposes of legislation...I am convinced that charters, vouchers, SCHOOL CHOICE is a trick to get everyone on the plantation.

How did he “screw the pooch”? Lay out your specifics or go away. You haven’t got anything but fart stench.

Here’s how he’s playing his hand:

He will not renew funding of Common Core. It’s now in the hands of the states what the hell they want with it.

He chooses a billionaire who is hated by the education unions.

As a billionaire she has no problem with closing that damn dept down because she doesn’t need the job for income.

She’s a nightmare to liberals because she kills them with SCHOOL CHOICE.

The inner cities need SCHOOL CHOICE yesterday.

Trump promised the inner cities he would help.

De Vos is going to slay the unions and get the states to adopt school choice.

De Vos’ only funding request will be to fund the design and construction of state-of-the-art secure, modern and clean schools.

Then she will close the Educ Dept the f*ck down.

Now what the hell are you sputtering your spittle about?
