I had one of those Kodak cameras. I had the same experience, except I never received a check. You are correct; the Kodak was far superior to the Polaroid.
Polaroid is now a shadow of its former self, as is Kodak.

You can’t even find Polaroid Film packs any more. It’s hard to find a place that will develop any kind of film.
We be all digital and stuff ,now.
