President-elect leans toward the former governor but advisers’ tug of war delays decision
President-elect Donald Trump is leaning toward asking former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney to be his secretary of state, according to people familiar with the deliberations.
The next U.S. president is also likely to name retired Marine Gen. James Mattis as His Secretary of Defense and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley is his leading candidate for Ambassador to the United Nations.

Transition officials say the meeting with Mr. Romney, a moderate Republican who was the party’s nominee for president in 2012, may not have been simply for show. They say that Mr. Trump believes that Mr. Romney, with his patrician bearing, looks the part of a top diplomat right out of “central casting” — the same phrase Mr. Trump used to describe Mike Pence before choosing him as his running mate.

Imagine, if an event takes out both Trump and Pence —> The GOP establishment gets what they want with Mitt and Paul Ryan being president and VP.

Apparently Rudy was interested in this job. I hope Rudy gets what he wants - he was perhaps the most loyal front line solider and surrogate in the Trump campaign.

I just posted a vanity thread asking where having Romney as SoS would result in a foreign policy relationship going in another direction than we would expect from President Trump.
None of us likes Romney. But substantively, where would he be likely to act in ways that are adverse to President Trump’s own foreign policy objectives?
