Report: Presidential electors planning to undermine Electoral College
The Hill ^ | 11/22/2016 | Harper Neidig

A number of Democratic Electoral College electors are planning to use their votes to undermine the election process in opposition to President-elect Donald Trump, Politico is reporting.

Some electors are lobbying their Republican counterparts to vote for someone other than Trump in an attempt to deny him the 270 votes required to elect him, according to the news outlet. They are also contemplating whether to cast their votes for someone other than Hillary Clinton

With at least six electors already vowing to become "faithless," the defection could be the most significant since 1808, when six Democratic-Republican electors refused to vote for James Madison, choosing vice presidential candidate George Clinton instead.

The electors acknowledge that it is unlikely that they will be able to block Trump from gaining office, Politico reported, but they are optimistic that their effort will raise enough questions about the Electoral College to reform or abolish it.

"If it gets into the House, the controversy and the uncertainty that would immediately blow up into a political firestorm in the U.S. would cause enough people — my hope is — to look at the whole concept of the Electoral College," one of the electors told Politico.

It’s unclear how many, if any, Republicans have signed on to the effort.

Twenty-nine states legally require their electors to obey the results of the popular vote in their state.

So six democrat electors won’t vote for Hillary??? Who cares..

Is it illegal to not vote for your party? Depends on the state some states electors are legally bound others or not, but to think they will get 37 republican electors to vote Hillary is laughable.

In entire history of EC there have only been something like 30 total protest votes by electors.

They did this in 2000 when GWB was elected. They tried to build this suspense on the day the electors voted in December. There were no defections at all. The same would happen next month.

"Trying to undermine the electoral process is insurrection."

Electors voting for who they want is not undermining it. That is the process.

Yes, it is legal in the sense that it cannot be stopped and the votes would be valid. Some Electors may incur (Constitutionally dubious) fines or penalties by not voting as pledged.

No, it won’t make a difference unless a large number of Trump / Pence Electors defect.

The only thing that could possibly cause that would be something that utterly discredited/disqualified Trump, to the extent that if he were elected he’d still face likely impeachment and removal. And that would basically send to the House Clinton, Trump and whatever Republican got the most of the dissenting votes — Pence? Romney? Who knows.

Trump would have to be revealed as Islamic extremist to have the electro college deny him the white house...maybe that one is not the best example as a reason.

If they’re democrat electors, they’re in the minority already... other than hoping GOP electors would follow suit (which won’t happen), WTH do these clowns think they’re accomplishing?

The electors acknowledge that it is unlikely that they will be able to block Trump from gaining office, Politico reported, but they are optimistic that their effort will raise enough questions about the Electoral College to reform or abolish it.

All it would do is erode confidence in Democrats that they can be trusted to honor their pledges.

The country just massively rejected Democrats at the polls. If these Democrats try this, it will erode the ability of future Democrats to get elected by giving Republican opponents the campaign charge that Democrats are not honest brokers and cannot be trusted with anything.

The only concern for me is why they are holding back the certification of Michigan for Trump. Is it to make this coup d’etat easier to pull off?

IIRC, the SCOTUS cannot declare a part of the Constitution unconstitutional............

Says who? We all know that if they can wave their arms the second amendment is gone if they get the five votes. So why not the electoral college? What can anyone do other than ignore them? But that would take courage from congress; have any confidence in that?

It’s a good thing these idiots are bound to fail, because they don’t even seem to realize they are trying to start a civil war.

When we vote for the president we are actually voting for the electors. The process should end right there - no need for them to revote in December. If there are 270+ republican electors, game over and, of course, ditto the other way around. All this speculation on how the electors will vote is horse excrement.

The wire service AP that all the other services rely on refuses to simply call it despite the SOS of Michigan saying that Trump won. The press wants to continue to frame reality and not allow the governing officials of Michigan to frame reality.

Trying to get electors to disobey the laws of their state in changing an election is bad enough. Now it is reported:
"Democrats are having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that they lost the presidential election. Now they are threatening to kill Republican electors unless they switch allegiance and vote for Hillary Clinton when the electoral college meets on December 19."
Excerpted from Powerline's "Desperate Democrats Turn to Death Threats."

Bolshekrat electors voting for someone, not Hitlery, the Republican electors would vote for is inconceivable.

The U.S. Constitution states otherwise.
