may refuse to abide the traditional dynamic of a president and the journalists who cover him, a naturally adversarial relationship that is nevertheless based on some level of mutual trust

wrong, the relationship was based on mistrust that the people, and the press as their proxy, had of the government. Now that the press has become so cozy with government they've forgotten that important fact of WHY THEY EXIST!

Disagree. The press has become cozy with a POLITICAL PARTY....not government. Or to put it another way, they are cozy with government only when the government is from their chosen party. If not, then they are antagonists.
