Schumer Threatens 'Tooth and Nail' Fight Over Supreme Court Nominee

Come January, Republicans will control all three branches of government, but with only 52 Republicans in the Senate. That will not give them the 60 needed to break a Democrat filibuster.

Appearing on various Sunday talk shows, Schumer was asked if Senate Democrats will filibuster Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, whoever it may be.

“I would hope first and foremost that President Trump nominates a mainstream nominee capable of getting bipartisan support,” Schumer told Fox News Sunday.

“If he does, then we’ll give it just a very, very thorough vetting, but we won’t ipso facto say no. If it’s out of the mainstream, yes, we’re going to fight that nominee tooth and nail.” …

There’s the filibuster threat. Don’t know if that can be done away with prior to a USSC nomination.

Of course it can be done, but likely McConnell won't. The Senate can do so with a 51 vote majority (or likely 50 + Pence). But it is a political matter, not a legal one. The GOP does not want a justice tainted by the perception they were shoved through without "proper deliberation."

If Mitch McConnell plays the Dems game, he will get rid of the filibuster. Reid did it. But the Repubs are afraid of pissing off the media.

I suggest we inundate them with calls and emails. I ‘d love to say ‘march’ on their offices but heck we all have jobs far more important than our Nation’s affairs, right?

What the hell is a filibuster these days anyways??? Enough with the threat of a filibuster shutting things down. If they want to filibuster, make 'em talk dammit! Do it the way it was supposed to be done. Then after a couple days of nonsense, congress gets to vote.

In other words, nominate who we want and we’ll make life miserable for them. And we might turn them down.

Nominate who Trump wants and they’ll burn the country down.

Somebody remind Amy’s uncle that the last time the D emocrats were this angry, we still had slavery and The War of Yankee Agression began.

Our nominee will be as mainstream as the wise Latina. Mainstream from our perspective means a constitutional scholar.

Uh Chuck.Harry changed the Senate rules. Presidential appointees need only 51 votes for confirmation.

Not Supreme Court nominees. They kept the filibuster in place for SCOTUS.

They can stop with the stupidity regarding the rules. There is no filibuster. The current agreement substitutes cloture for filibuster. Republicans could nip this in the butt if instead of cloture, they required an actual filibuster for SC Justice nominees. So a couple of days would be wasted with some nitwit gabbing. Eventually they tire and the vote can be held.

"Come January, Republicans will control all three branches of government,..."

I keep seeing this phrase in many articles. And it is wrong.

Republicans DO control the three branches of American government: Federal, the States, and the People.

Lindsay Graham, John McCain, and Jeff Flake (at a minimum) are fully prepared to back Schumer fully.

Remove these fools from committees

I don’t think we will have to worry about Manchin after Trump carried 3/4’s of his state - can’t see him voting with the left because he said he will vote with his constituents - especially because Trump is going to end the war on coal (a huge percentage of the WV economy.

We need to target the rat Senators in states that Trump carried. That should be the focus of the GOP.
