France’s Fillon Wins Top Spot In Conservative Primary, Sarkozy Goes Out

French ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy on Sunday conceded defeat in the race to be the conservatives’ nominee for next year’s presidential election after his former prime minister, Francois Fillon, stormed to a winning lead in the primaries.

KEYWORDS:
With the Left very divided and a majority of voters seen in opinion polls to be opposed to seeing the far-right National Front in power, the chosen centre-right nominee is likely to defeat party leader Marine Le Pen in an expected election run-off next May.

But while polls have consistently shown Juppe would easily beat Le Pen, there have been no recent surveys on how Fillon would fare in such a match, in further evidence of how unexpected his top spot on Sunday was.

Sarkozy was the face of the French establishment and he and favorite Allain Juppe lost bigly.

French President Hollande is deeply unpopular.

The country is due for major change next year when presidential and then legislative elections are due.

"An admirer of late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, as Labour and Social Affairs Minister he faced down street protests in 2003 over his retirement pension age reforms."

He's not going to go over well with the voters in a general election unless he co-opts a lot of LePen's policies on immigration and cracking down on Islamist extremism.

It's hard for me to see how a French version of a libertarian is going to compete effectively in the next election. He may come in third behind a Socialist dweeb, in which case it will be LePen vs. the Socialist in the run-off (good for LePen IMHO).

co-opts a lot of LePen's policies on immigration and cracking down on Islamist extremism.

I expect he will do exactly that. Afterwards, assuming he's elected and his party controls the National Assembly, I expect a half way in and half way out disappointing presidency reminiscent of GWB.

However, the French can surprise, like when Mitterand looked around and said "This Socialist crap isn't working. Maybe I should back up and govern like a Conservative (and become good friends with just elected Ronald Reagan).".

The French left will all vote for Fillon to keep Le Pen out.

The French always vote defensively, never for anyone.

Unexpected by some. I expected it. Fillon is respected. Juppe is not trusted.....often referred to as “that” mayor of Bordeaux.

Sarko hurt himself with his attack on Trump’s refusal to kow-tow to the Global Warming rip off. Was surprised because Sarko was always a strong defender and friend of the U.S. I think he overplayed his hand and it cost him because there is an underground liking in France for Trump and don’t be surprised at a Frexit. There’s a lot of scuttlebutt on that subject.
