UK Researchers: Tax Food to Reduce Climate Change (Get Ready To Be Hungry)

A group of researchers in Oxford University, England have suggested that imposing a massive tax on carbon intensive foods – specifically protein rich foods like meat and dairy – could help combat climate change.

“ Pricing food according to its climate impacts could save half a million lives and one billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions

Taxing greenhouse gas emissions from food production could save more emissions than are currently generated by global aviation, and lead to half a million fewer deaths from chronic diseases, according to a new study published in Nature Climate Change.

The study, conducted by a team of researchers from the Oxford Martin Programme on the Future of Food at the University of Oxford and the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington DC, is the first global analysis to estimate the impacts that levying emissions prices on food could have on greenhouse gas emissions and human health.

The findings show that about one billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions could be avoided in the year 2020 if emissions pricing of foods were to be implemented, more than the total current emissions from global aviation. However, the authors stress that due consideration would need to be given to ensuring such policies did not impact negatively on low income populations.

“Emissions pricing of foods would generate a much needed contribution of the food system to reducing the impacts of global climate change,” said Dr Marco Springmann of the Oxford Martin Programme on the Future of Food, who led the study. “We hope that’s something policymakers gathering this week at the Marrakech climate conference will take note of.”

The Lear Jet Leftists expect to form the core of the global Green Inner Party. They will continue to enjoy the finest foods and most advanced gadgets the world has to offer — while deciding your fate for you.

If you work very hard and show them unwavering loyalty, you might be permitted to join the global Green Outer Party. Then you would be allowed occasional servings of meat - and air conditioning on a rationed basis.

The rest of us will eat insects and swelter – “for the good of the planet.”

Oxford (and Cambridge) are rapidly morphing into copies of formerly top American universities.

If it ain’t STEM, it ain’t sh*t.

Their Physics/Engineering/Math/etc faculties are without peer.

But even those famed science and humanities institutions cannot long overcome the constant attack of folks without morals, consciences, and...OK, I’ll say it...many smarts. And you know in which “departments” those clowns choose to live and spawn.

Um, all foods are carbon-intensive. Fat has carbon. Protein has carbon. Carbohydrates have carbon.

The foods which are less carbon intensive (that is, they contain fewer calories per gram of weight) are the ones that require the most energy to transport. If you want to save energy, tax bottled water and fresh spinach, not protein powder.

That was pretty much the entire plot of the recent Dan Brown movie, Inferno.

I have one question, is human activity inventing CO 2, or is it something that naturally exists?

It seems to me that it exists in nature, and burning oil, coal and wood just releases it. If that is true, we couldn’t possibly destroy the planet. There is not enough CO 2 that exists to do that, unless the entire atmosphere was CO 2, then plants decided to destroy the planet by giving out an icehouse gas, called Oxygen.
