It is a Rousseauian viewpoint, that man had his highest point of purity and goodness before societies developed and were allowed to do their dirty work on him. To him, good and bad were social constructs.
Liberals want to take us back there, to a place where humans are unencumbered by any restrictions or values placed on them by others.
Most conservatives think that less legislation and restriction is a good thing, but few of us think there shouldn’t be any, especially not limiting what we say, what we eat, etc.
