Donald Trump’s Plan to Purge the Nation (Times Hysteria Alert)
NYT ^ | 11/18/2016 | NY Slimes Editorial Board

Posted on 11/18/2016 11:19:17 AM PST by usafa92

President-elect Donald Trump says he will move immediately to deport or imprison two million, maybe three million, unauthorized-immigrant criminals. “What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers,” he said on Sunday on “60 Minutes.”

Like many of his proposals, this one sounds tough and straightforward, but makes no sense under scrutiny and is frightening to think about.

Start with the fact that the target number is made up. There simply aren’t as many criminal immigrants as he imagines. According to rough estimates by the Migration Policy Institute, of the country’s 11 million unauthorized immigrants, about 820,000 have criminal records. About 300,000 of those have felony convictions and are presumably the bad people Mr. Trump is talking about. If he deports those and only those, it will be a remarkable display of law-enforcement discretion, since he said that there were lots of “terrific people” among the unauthorized who might be allowed to stay, “after the border is secured and after everything gets normalized.”

If they are here illegally then they all have criminal records by definition.

"Unauthorized" immigrants are all criminals. Nevertheless, the deportation of "only" 820,000 people who have committed an additional offense strikes me as a very sound idea, and you wonder what sort of ideological blinders they're wearing over at the Times to think otherwise.

Where did you get those bogus numbers? The air? I know a lot of people and not one has a criminal record.

The needs of safety for hundreds of millions outweighs the depraved perverted needs of the millions of undocumented criminal Democrats.

Made up like the "11 million" number of illegal aliens in the USA that we've been hearing for the last 15 years? It's got to be closer to 30 million in my mind.

How Many Americans Have a Police Record? Probably More Than You Think and elsewhere. I get the sense that "criminal record" may not even mean that the person was arrested, just that some cop took down some notes about him. In any case, it's curious that illegal aliens would be so much less scrutinized.

“I know a lot of people and not one has a criminal record.”

That you know of. We have a friend who is head of HR at the large general hospital here. He says that about one-third of all applicants for jobs at the hospital (from orderly to nursing supervisor, but not including physicians) have a disqualifying criminal background and another one-sixth flunk the drug screen.

So in other words, there are 11 million criminals

Every one of them that is here illegally is a criminal. I thought that was self-defining.

I think the entire purpose of this article is to slip the new euphemism “unauthorized immigrant” into the lexicon.

Either deport the illegals or shoot them on sight. Give them the choice. THEN you’ll see self-deporting scumbags run for the border like the old Taco Bell commercial!

Only 11 million?

I think that's because their kids born here don't count towards the total, while we do tend to think of them as illegal. Still probably a low estimate.

Unbelievable. I’m shocked. I can’t help but think that those statistics are specific to that venue and area. Large hospital = city....city = large immigrant documented or not, sample. You’re sample is counting the demographic that you’re disputing. It is erroneous.

“I can’t help but think that those statistics are specific to that venue and area. Large hospital = city....city = large immigrant documented or not, sample.”

Of course, you’re right, this is just one sample from a specific geographic area. But the hospital is in a mid-size college town with a population, including the mostly rural suburbs, of approximately 200,000. I’ve spoken with other area employers about this issue (for example, the university and a large Caterpillar plant) and they say much the same thing: about half of all job applicants are disqualified because of various background (e.g., criminal or drug) concerns.

For what it’s worth, I was initially shocked as well.
