Americans are still signing up for Obamacare, despite President-elect Trump's promise to repeal it soon after he takes office.

More than one million people selected plans for 2017 on the federal exchange in the first 12 days of open enrollment, which began November 1, according to the Department of Health & Human Services. That is 53,000 more than in the comparable period a year ago.

Administration officials are using enrollment data to promote the importance of Obamacare to Americans, trying to counter Republicans' assertions that it is pricey and broken.

Re: Obama’s claim: “It turns out that for most people you can get a good quality policy for as little as $75 a month. That's less than your cell phone bill,” he said in a video released by the White House this morning. “So go to Healthcare.gov you'll be able to shop for a plan that works for you ... Make sure that you've got the financial security and the peace of mind that comes with health insurance.”

A good quality policy for $75 a month??? That is surely a baldfaced lie. Who exactly is eligible for that rate and what coverage do they actually qualify for? How much is their copay? If Americans could get a good quality policy for $75 a month there would be no need to encourage people to sign up.

With Obamacare gone, people will have to figure this out on their own. No one more handouts! Can’t pay their doc? Don’t go to the doc. It’s really up to every individual to stay healthy. It’s not that hard. Don make me pay if you can’t handle it.

People will do that when there is a gun to their heads to do so.

The media tries to make headlines of people signing up. But they never mention the number of people ignoring the law

A single person making around $20K would qualify for a silver plan. That person would be at 168% FPL and be entitled to additional cost share reductions. It is more like a gold plan. They can can get a bronze plan for even less, but those have the higher deductibles and no cost sharing.

They had to sign up, or be fined into the poor house.

My cousin gets a good policy for less than that. She works as a CNA at a retirement home and makes a little over minimum wage. When Obamacare first started she signed up for the bronze plan and her monthly cost was a couple of dollars. Of course she didn’t have the money to meet the deductibles or copay so kept using a free clinic. Eventually she signed up for a silver plan and started paying more but because of her income is heavily subsidized. She pays around $75 a month now and has great insurance.
If your income is low you can meet his $75 a month be3cause of the subsidies.

Legal? How many were ‘pay your own way’ vs. govt-robbing-Peter-to-pay-Paul?

Sure it is. It’s subsidized for thousands of dollars, has a sky high deductible, and is still poor quality.

Well yah. The law is still in effect. There are still penalties for not having coverage. Employers have still dropped people’s hours to under 30 or dropped family coverage.

Nothing has changed - yet. But it will soon ;)

But, had she ever needed anything from her insurance, she would have had to drop $6,000 out of pocket first, which of course she doesn’t have.

Sounds like the appropriate plan for a young person. Basically catastrophic coverage.
