Trump, meeting with Federalist Society, indicates he won't veer from Supreme Court shortlists

President-elect Trump's advisers are indicating he will likely stick to the shortlists released during the presidential campaign when given the chance to name a Supreme Court nominee.

Trump met with Leonard Leo, the executive vice president of the right-leaning Federalist Society, at Trump Tower on Wednesday and discussed the evaluation process for filling the vacancy created by Justice Antonin Scalia's death. Leo and top Trump aide Kellyanne Conway addressed reporters after the meeting, insisting Trump's list of 21 potential Court nominees has not changed.

I’m glad to see him already meeting with one of the heads of the Federalist Society

Seriously .. that news alone should avert much pearl-clutching.

Exactly!

Trump nominates the new Supreme Court justice and tells the Senate that the sooner they confirm, the sooner he nominates Cruz for AG.

The Senate will work weekends to move them both through the process, LOL.

He’s a workhorse. He’ll wear them down in a few months

I agree. He's already inside their heads, too. I hope he keeps smacking their faces for the next four years (eight if he does the job like we hope he will).

Janice Rogers Brown to replace Justice Scalia. Let them scream racism.

"I don’t believe Cruz is on that list..."

He isn't. If anything, I think Trump will throw Cruz a life preserver with an appointment to an appeals court. If he does well there he'd possibly have a shot at SCOTUS in the future. If not, then he can't hide from the fact that he died by his own hand.

Could be a win-win. I will be surprised if Cruz is made AG.

Yes, that and also Kellyanne Conway saying that Trump is sticking to his list of potential nominees.

Some conservatives are reacting to every piece of spin about Trump that the presstitutes put out. We should all be celebrating, but some are already doubting Trump without good reason. They better not nitpick Trump’s presidency when he still gets a lot more done for us than either of the Bushes, McCain, or Romney.

Don’t you love how they write “right-leaning Federalist Society”. They don’t write “left-leaning Center for American Progress” or “left-leaning Democracy Alliance”.

Nothing tells you Cruz is doing a better job than having those people as enemies.

Selecting someone not on his lists (there were actually two of them, IIRC) would be a blunder, an unforced error.

It was dangerous - bold - to create those lists, because any one of the names on them might have proved problematic, and the Democrats might have made major hay. However, now that the election is won the list is a major advantage.

The Democrats love to parrot their mantra, “Judge so-and-so is out of the mainstream.” But that is a nonstarter now that the Democrats have had a chance to damage Trump if they could have convinced people that any one of those names was a clinker - and they passed. Try that mantra now, and the answer will be that the voting public knew about the lists, and every name on them - and they voted for Trump in your state, Senator Foghorn (true of ten incumbent D senators up for reelection). And you are up for reelection in ’18 (half of all D senators are), which is just around the corner. Do you really want to try to make that case??

I hope Kennedy retires soon. And although I love Thomas, I would love to see Trump replace them both with 40 something year old conservatives.

We can’t spare Thomas just yet. IMHO.

In eight years, maybe.

Mike Lee is great, too, because of his age.

Nobody over 55.

Careful. If the RATs ever get the Senate they will block all our appointments, like we did Garland.

And honestly, good chance we lose the Senate in 2022.

So better than folks leave while we have an R senate.
