States are a relic of the past. It’s time to get rid of them.

While Donald Trump resoundingly won the electoral college — the state-based “point system” we’ve used in presidential elections for more than two centuries — Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by about 780,000 as of a week out of the election. In other words, more Americans wanted Clinton to win, reason enough to revisit the wisdom of using the electoral college to determine elections. But a larger, more important argument is often overlooked in this ongoing debate.

But as The Donald correctly pointed out, if the popular vote was the goal he could have campaigned much more in vote-rich CA (36+ million pop.) Texas, and New York, and thus run up a massive total of popular votes.

So that we may see the person under discussion;

Lawrence R. Samuel, Ph.D., is an American cultural historian whose books include Freud on Madison Avenue: Motivation Research and Subliminal Advertising in America, Supernatural America: A Cultural History, Sexidemic: A Cultural History of Sex In America, Shrink: A Cultural History of Psychoanalysis in America, and Death American Style: A Cultural History of Dying in America. Larry holds a Ph.D. in American Studies and was a Smithsonian Institution Fellow. Larry lives in Miami, Florida and can be reached at lsamuel19@yahoo.com."

Translation, Obama failed to do what 'we' now see needed to be done to preserve our march to the Progressive Utopia. His 'fundumental change of America' still allowed this barbarian to replace him. This must never be allowed to happen again - THROW the USofA into the trash because I did not get my way!

Poor colicky baby throwing a tantrum!

So that would make it the United State of America?

RE: “more Americans wanted Clinton to win”

But she has received less than 48% of the the “national popular vote” so most Americans did not want Clinton to win.

Oh, and the author can go to hell with his crackpot schemes.

As many have pointed out:

1. States stopped counting absentees when the vote difference in their state was out of reach.

2. Many reports of millions of votes cast by illegals that probably won't be challenged.

3. You can't assume the vote counts would be the same if this were a pure popular vote election from the beginning. Entire campaign strategies from both candidates would have been radically different.

This would be like somebody complaining that they had led the most laps at the Daytona 500 and should have therefore been declared the winner regardless of where they finished.

And, the 3 million illegal votes they've already uncovered? How's THAT fit your popular vote narrative?

reason enough to revisit the wisdom of using the electoral college to determine elections

Right...let's let California & New York decide future elections by usurping the votes of the rest of America. GFY

Split off the major, leftist cities from their largely conservative states, creating new states. Inland California from coastal California. Upstate New York from New York City. Eastern Washington from Seattle. Eastern Oregon from Portland. Downstate Illinois from Chicago. Western Pennsylvania from Philadelphia.

This wouldn’t likely change the leftist cities, but it sure would reduce and counteract their influence upon national elections.

So at least one comes out and tells us what they honestly believe.

I would like to ask the writer, who obviously believes that large population centers should dictate to everyone else: how much food can those population centers growwithin their own confines to feed themselves?

“States are a relic of the past. It’s time to get rid of them.”

The Washington Post is a relic of the past. It’s time to get rid of it.

The WaPo is dead except inside the beltway. No one cares.

It is so bad to waste a brain like the author is.

We need to come up with a way to change that. How do we “revert” places like New York and California back to the side of sanity?

Simple. Eliminate winner takes all electoral vote awards and instead award them by popular vote winner in each congressional district. Award two additional EV's for the state-wide vote winner. That would prevent urban NY from constantly overriding the will of the people in rural NY.

You used to be able to go to Canada without a passport and in fact you still can if you have the right papers but a passport makes it easier.
