In 2006/07 Michael Bloomberg conspired to violate Virginia’s law against engaging in the “straw purchase” of firearms. He sent some minions to Virginia to try to fraudulently purchase guns.
Because most firearm dealers are honest and vigilant about those to whom they sell guns, the Bloom-bots were unable to successfully make any “straw purchases”. When confronted about his actions Mr. Bloomberg used his position as mayor of NYC to claim he was engaging in a legitimate undercover operation, even though he clearly lacks the authority to enforce any laws of Virginia.
For various political reasons he was not prosecuted for the existing laws he broke, but I the aftermath Virginia quickly passed a new law making it [even more] crystal clear that outsiders are not allowed to organize undercover “stings” in Virginia. This new law was signed by none other than Mr. Tim Kaine, who was the sitting governor of Virginia at the time.
On April 13, 2007, the Virginia Attorney General, Bob McDonnell, sent Mayor Bloomberg a letter pretty much promising to prosecute him as a felon if he ever tried another unauthorized “undercover operation” in Virginia.
Virginia was not the only state in which Bloomberg organized his own so-called “simulated straw purchase stings”, and I suspect he and his cohorts are still doing it. I’m sure if some state AGs dig deep enough they will have no trouble finding other instances of Mr. Bloomberg directing his people to violate various state gun laws.
OK, then. If he gets caught, “play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”
