Much of the Bay Area's support for illegal immigrants actually comes for the huge population of illegals living and not so much from the general population.
This is especially so for the Bay Area's huge population of legal immigrants and their first generation American children who had to live in the confines of the legal immigrations system.
Lots of Californians hate the illegal immigration system , especially the families legal immigrants - but they have been demoralized and intimidated (literally and physically - remember Trump's San Jose visit) by the combined might of the official California government power structure and the power of the illegal immigrant culture.
These Native American Californians and legal immigrant and driven into silence and the the shadows in their own home state.
The California Health and Human Services Agency has been virtually recruiting pregnant illegal alien women to come to the Bay Area to have free medical care and labor and delivery costs so the can have an Anchor Baby born in a Bay Area hospital.
Since at least the mid 1980’s it has been the unstated policy of the radicals within the California Health and Human Services Agency to change the demographic makeup of California from White to a majority of “racial minorities” , predominantly from South of the Border.
Coincidentally about the time when they began making self fulfilling predictions that by 2010 California would be a “Majority Minority's” State.
Lots of Californians hate the illegal immigration system because they understand that the political class of California is intentionally destroying their lives in order to engineer a permanent electoral majority for themselves
