Well of COURSE you can’t ban Muslim Americans, they’re citizens, we’ll get around to stripping that later, however he most certainly CAN ban mudzlums from other countries, that power was granted to the president long ago. Nevertheless, he never meant ALL muzlims, just the bad ones, or if he did it was only until we figure out what’s going on.
He can do a ban and extraordinary vetting under his Patriot Act powers. He can also build the wall to prevent terrorism.
Especially if it is from a big block V-8. That’ll leave a mark.
So how is this going to work exactly?

Absolutely untrue. The US Government may ban people
from entering the United States for any reason. Religion
and race included. It was done routinely in the past.
Even Americans can be prevented from entering there own
country -- usually that is for health reasons. No one has
the right to enter the country without the permission of the
of the government. Just because the government nearly
always gives its consent that does not mean that consent
can't be withheld.
He is trying to look open-minded with his opponents.
Folks, that’s all it is. These are all negotiating tactics, employed when the moment requires.
It probably wouldn’t be a good idea to expend political capital trying to implement the “muslim ban”, though as others have stated he’d already moved to enhanced vetting and scrutiny to people from particular nations. He should definitely follow through on this promise of extra scrutiny.
A more comprehensive, conservative approach to reforming legal immigration would be preferable to the ‘muslim ban’ anyway, as it could generally end Democrat-importing mass immigration and would largely take care of the problem.
1. Drastically reduce refugee/asylum admittances, of which many go to Muslims. As President, Trump can do this all on his own. Obama has increased the total annual number from 70,000 to over 100,000 per year. Trump could and should slash that number so that it’s much closer to zero. As part of that, he should simply not accept significant numbers from Muslim nations.
2. Work with Congress to abolish the absurd Diversity Lottery Visas. Many of these go to people in Muslim nations, and they in turn kick off chain migration.
3. Work with Congress to end extended family chain migration. Restrict family immigration to spouses and minor children. Without the adult-sibling and adult children categories, the almost never-ending pool of potential future Muslim immigrants will dry up.
Do these things and Muslim immigration would be greatly reduced.
Wrong!! The president may UNILATERALLY jail, throw out of the country or ban any individual or group of individuals from entering this country if he believes they pose a risk to national security.
FDR did it and Carter did it as well.

if they were not properly vetted, they waited offshore... or in chicago.

There is reciprocity in that. If we start requiring visas from the UK or Germany or France or Belgium then they will require our citizens to get visas from them. That won't be very popular with travelers or with people in the U.S. who make a living off foreign tourists.

I believe Trump is sly like a fox.
He put on an act on the campaign trail but there is much more to the man than that.
The blustery guy on the campaign trail is not the guy who was smart enough to build a multi-billion dollar empire.
It’s not the guy who conceived and carried out a campaign that outfoxed the media, the republican elites, the democrat party, the billion dollar Hillary campaign and the wealthy leftists who financed a significant anti-Trump effort.
I heard a reference to a quote this morning that I believe sums it up.

The voters who put him in office took him seriously but not literally.”

It can be done without an overt ban in Muslims.
