The Senate’s soon-to-be top Democrat told labor leaders Thursday that the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the trade deal at the center of President Obama’s “pivot” to strengthen ties with key Asian allies, will not be ratified by Congress.

That remark from Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), who is expected to be the incoming Senate minority leader, came as good news to the AFL-CIO executive council, which met Thursday in Washington. Schumer relayed statements Republican congressional leaders had made to him, according to an aide who confirmed the remarks.

Obama’s signature global trade deal had been on life support for months as both Democrats and Republicans campaigned against unfair trade policies ahead of the Nov. 8 election. And Donald Trump’s triumph in the presidential race cemented its fate.

Schumer is going to be one of the more intriguing characters in Washington for the next few years.

He's a political animal and will be expected to toe the Democrat Party line as the party's leader in the Senate, but as a New Yorker he is owned by Wall Street interests and will have to walk a tightrope to keep all of his partners happy.

It’s funny how it’s allegedly good news to the AFL-CIO leaders when they supported Hillary, who everyone knows would have eventually supported TPP despite lying and saying otherwise in the campaign.

The union members and the union leadership are two entirely different things these days and have been for quite a while.

Just like the government the unions have been taken over by oligarchs and bureaucrats who don't give a damn about those they're supposed to represent.
