This isn’t just about trick-or-treating. There are so many community traditions that just don’t happen anymore. Community parties. Neighborhood block parties. Community Christmas caroling or parties. Halloween trick-or-treating. Neighborhood dinner parties for adults. A lot of the socially cohesive traditions that arose in the Post World War II era (and that were still around when I was a kid growing up in the 1970s) are gradually dying. Its a shame.
Reminds me of the Harvard study the Libs didn’t like. It showed as the diversity of a community increases, the community involvement decreases.
Every Halloween we gather around the fire pit in front of our neighbor’s house for a pot luck block party. It’s always a great time!
My house has seen 4 generations of us and we used to have neighborhood parties in our back yard. Not anymore. Too many nutty liberal Californians moved in and wanted to change everything. All the old families have sold out because of the high taxes and half the houses are now vacations rentals. There are far too many strangers coming and going these days.
Even the people you’d think would be decent aren’t. We had a major computer company VP who would snoop around and make himself and kid at home on anyone’s deck. The kid was a terror. It was that behavior, from a wealthy executive, that caused us to start locking our doors.
