Remember Frank Toricelli “The Torch” Senator from New Jersey; he was convicted, removed from office. It was legally too late to replace him with anyone. Frank Lautenberg replaced him and won. ((Dems have their own rules))

That particular decision still stinks. The Republicans followed the rules and had a legitimately nominated candidate. Torricelli could have resigned sooner and a legitimately candidate could have been appointed. It should have been a too bad, how sad moment for the Democrats. But no, the courts intervened instead of staying out of it. The reasoning was that the people deserved a competetive race. True. In six years, they could have had their competitive race.

It's too bad that the courts in California don't have the same view. There are races in California which are a choice between two Democrats.
