I’ve been a big fan of Davis for a long time.

His book on the Peloponnesian War “A War Like No Other” is about the best introduction to the subject I could imagine. I re-read it maybe every other year.

I also have read A War Like No Other. I highly recommend it to others.

And given the subject of that book, I grinned the use of the word "laconic" by someone to describe this column. The term comes from a description of ancient Spartans.
