America is so very, very different now.

I’m thankful I knew it then, when boys could head out on their bikes, on their own, without helmets or cell phones, all day, to explore, learn of their physical world and be boys.

I used to ride the chopper bike I built and custom painted myself from Queens, New York, into Manhattan when I was 13. I had a portable cassette player (remember those?) fixed to the neck of the handlebars and would play the Stones or the Moody Blues while riding around. I think I only had two songs on the tape. I recorded them off the radio with the cheap external mike that came with the player.

My inspiration for the bike were those really cool Schwinn Sting Rays around at the time: Orange Krate and Lemon Peeler (yellow). Didn't learn to around a year ago that they had many others in the line besides those two. All were identical apart from the color. They had the Apple Krate (red), Pea Splitter (green), Coal Krate (gray), Grape Krate (purple), and a couple others. The Grape Krate I didn't know about until just last week. I had wondered why they never made one.

Below are the Orange Krate, Lemon Peeler and Grape Krate...

My home built chopper bike had a longer chrome chopper fork that I bought pre-made from a local bike store. I painted the bike (with spray cans) lime gold and blue metal flake with a heavy top coat of clear. My father, who had been an auto upholsterer years earlier made, at my begging, a white (fake)leather seat for me that covered not only the banana seat, but also went up the long "sissy bar" (that's what they called them, even for Harley motorcycles) in the back. He stitched it in a diamond pattern with black buttons. I wish I had thought at the time to have taken pictures of it. But picture taking back then of course was not nearly so simple as it is today with cell and smartphones.
