When I was a kid, my parent used paper ballots. Some of the voting places were actually little sheds set up in parks. They had coal stoves in them! The ballots were called bedsheets since everything was on one big sheet. They had a table for you to mark them.

First machines I saw were the size of a refrigerator but not as thick.

Then we had punch cards.

Then came the touch screens.

Quickly replaced by sheet where you fill in the bubbles and run them through their scanner. This one seems easy, fast, and probably fairly cheap.

But the computers the votes go into scare me. Anything can happen after that. Of course, we need a system that's fairly quick and is VERY difficult to cheat on by local politicians. There are a lot of sharp people who could design this. We also need a way to prevent the voters from cheating, too.

A LOT of money must have changed hands with all those systems that were frequently replaced.

I'm sure Diebold lobbied hard.

My district has been using those for years now and I suspect they are pretty reliable. I get my ballot in the mail and sit down with voter's guides and/or internet research and make my best choices at my leisure. I could mail it back but I like to go to the polling place and personally drop it in the lock box.

My suspicion also. That's taxpayer fraud.

That means you are correctly calibrated.

That is because it has nothing to do with the machines- the same claims pop up with old paper ballots too, only in those cases manufacturing ballots is even easier.

The real vote fraud occurs at the registration level, not on the machines, no matter the type of machine.

The real fraud is in the registration of voters, with fraudsters preferring to register voters who are least likely to show up to vote. What the fraudsters are after is to raise the number of unclaimed ballots in each targeted precinct or parish because it is these unclaimed ballots which they will use to puff up the count of their candidate.

Unless there is an accurate voter ID system- photo ID- there will always be fraud. Unless the rolls are purged of the dead and voters who are registered in more than one county are purged, there will always be fraud.

Worrying about the machines is nothing but a distration from the real problem.
