Should obese passengers pay more to fly?
BBC ^ | 20 October 2016 | Beth Blair

Airlines want more money from heavy fliers, but some say it's a rights violation. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity has more than doubled since 1980. In 2014, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight, and over 600 million were obese. (WHO defines "overweight" as a BMI greater than or equal to 25 and "obese" as a BMI greater than or equal to 30.)

Last month, lawyer Giorgio Destro from Padua, Italy sued Emirates, claiming his flight was disrupted by an obese passenger seated next to him. According to reports, Destro was not able to comfortably sit in his assigned seat, and spent much of the nine-hour flight from Cape Town to Dubai standing or sitting in crew seats. His proof for the lawsuit? A selfie that includes his fellow passenger’s arm in his seat space.

...Many airlines have responded to the growing obesity epidemic by insisting passengers of size buy two seats to ensure safety and comfort. Sometimes the airline will offer a refund if there was at least one other empty seat on the flight.

The airline company has to spend a certain amount for fuel per lb of weight and if you cost more to lift, then you should pay more. Sorry.

They can solve this by pricing your ticket per pound the same as they do with your luggage. Smaller people would get cheaper tickets and larger people would have more expensive tickets.

I don't care if your BMI is perfect, if you are 6'6" you are going to spill over.

Absolutely. Airlines should be accountable for delivering the seat I purchase. I am a very frequent flyer and my biggest dread is being seat next to an obese person that usurps part of my seat.

I fit in the seats except for my arms and shoulders. Try to get aisle seats ad I’m fine. Window seats are ok because I can kind of twist a bit and lean on wall...but if I’m between other people I hold my arms and shoulders foreward to give them room. It’s great to be huge and strong in a confintation...not do much when flying...

Us big people hate to fly. Damn tiny seats. And there is no amount of weight loss that will help for us people who are simply big.

This is all part of divide and conquer. Get us cattle to fight over who gets a window seat on the way to the slaughterhouse.

Everyone should be charged by bodyweight, then?

Problem is, a person who takes up two seats doesn’t necessarily weigh twice as much as the average. Thus, if you charged by weight, a person could get two seats for less than the price of two.

Best to charge by how many seats a person takes up.

The REALLY important thing is for people not to be paying for a seat, and then getting compressed into one-half a seat by a whale.

ANYBODY whose spare tire slops over the armrest should pay for two seats.

I know.

You can be rail thin but when you are big you are just BIG.

Flew beside a guy who was probably 6' 3" and wide in the shoulders. His right shoulder hovered over my head the entire trip. Thankfully I am short or else there would have been problems.

He apologized for taking up so much room but I told him it was nice to travel with someone who could adjust the air without standing up.

Sweet guy.
