Kristol is a Garden Party Republican. He thinks Republicans need to be polite, be concerned with dollar issues only - particularly of the moneyed class - and should always defer to their social betters - elitist Democrats - while sniffing down their noses at working class conservatives. After all, the only function of the latter is to toil to pay taxes, so people of his class can take their money and redistribute it to the social parasites upon whom the elites rely for their political power.

I can’t speak to the specific timeline, but if Kristol was pointing out the general media, then yes, he would be correct. There was a lot of people who saw the Donald as a clown candidate that later “woke up” when he didn’t go away as his support swelled.
These people have expended every shred of their credibility and they got NOTHING for it. They crapped in their own nest and now find the environment unpleasant. Well, ... tough.
They took the stance that ANYTHING would be better than Trump. Now they face a real possibility that they have helped Hillary win and they know that their reign is over if she does win. Fittingly, their reign is also over if she doesn't win.
