Ford will cut production of F-series, other models as demand slows

In a fresh sign of pressure on U.S. automakers, Ford Motor Co on Monday said it will shut down production of its best-selling F-150 pickup truck for a week at a Kansas City assembly plant, and temporarily idle three other plants over the next several weeks.

About 13,000 Ford hourly workers will be laid off during the temporary shutdowns. There are nearly 14,000 workers at the four plants, the company said. Some of them are salaried managers. Of the layoffs, about 4,000 will be in Mexico and about 9,000 in the United States. The cuts will hit Ford's three highest-volume models in the United States.

F-150 production at the Dearborn Truck Plant in Michigan will continue without interruption, Ford said. Ford is also suspending production of two sport utility vehicles, the Ford Escape and the Lincoln MKC, at its Louisville Assembly Plant for two of the next three weeks. The compact Escape, the company's second best-selling U.S. model, is under increasing pressure from Japanese rivals. Escape U.S. sales were down 12 percent in September.

Ford said it also is shutting two plants in Mexico. One is a plant in Hermosillo that makes the Ford Fusion and the Lincoln MKZ sedans, and the other is in Cuautitlan that makes the Ford Fiesta small car. Fusion is the No. 3 seller in Ford's U.S. lineup, but suffered a 17.5 percent drop in sales last month.

I hopefully have bought my last new one for many, many years. It was 33k for a 16 Tacoma 4wd with a 6 speed manual.

I love it, don’t get me wrong but I hope to have one of my old jeeps back to roadworthy status by the end of the year.

Parts are murder these days. It goes double for jeep and triple for Willys.

I plan to the replacement windshield frame and glass in next week. After that, lift kit on order and budget to send it off for a few jobs that me in a carport can’t quite accommdate.

It is just a line adjustment to match production to demand. Nothing new. Happens occasionally, and they can do maintenance, too. Was checking for 2017 models but didn’t find any at the dealerships here in Louisville.

Pretty much. I won’t pay it. I will drive what I got into the ground and buy used. I will not pay more money for a car than what I paid for my first house, that just ain’t right.

The car companies are pricing themselves into oblivion and when the cheap or no interest rates run dry kaboom!

I take that back. There are some 2017 at the dealers. Just not the car I was looking for.

Some people really need “trucks”. Most I know use them as a car (and to haul their trash)

Isn’t great how Fords are made in Mexico? Ford must be so proud with the help of Madison Ave. they started an advertising campaign flaunting how Mexicans are great workers and the sticker price reductions, WOW! A free sombrero with each purchase. I mean it is a win win. /SARCASM

>> “Just not the car I was looking for.” <<

No manufacturer is building the cars anybody in their right mind is looking for.

That is the problem.

The market is saturated because of super cheap interest rates.

.

There is no way that I would buy an SUV that has a turbo.

There is also no way that I would buy one with less than 340 cubic inches displacement.

They can all suck eggs if that is the way they are going. I’ll rebuild the engine in the one I have if necessary.

Funny how Ford is not idling any of the new state of the art plants in old Mexico. I smell a rat.

Borrowing money at 0% for 48months is not debt. It is smart.

I was looking for a Ford, but they didn’t have the options I wanted. After 27 yrs of taking Ford money(husband ), I would never buy another vehicle. He is now retired and we are looking at a travel car. Have a Flex that we love. Might get a Transit. My son-in-law(engineer) launched it and is a big fan.

My local dealer just got a 2014 Ford F-150 with an extended cab and only 16K miles on it as a trade-in that they are asking $20K for. I am tempted. The carfax is clean and it has only had one owner.

On the other hand, my 1997 F-150 is mostly reliable and has no car payments.

Flex is cute, but troublesome.

My elder daughter bought one and it had to be called back as an unreparable lemon, so she bought a new one (she loves them) and it is also beginning to fail.

Its the electronics that are total garbage.
