The problem isn't the partisan press. It's the poseur press.
The man whom we believe is necessarily, in the things concerning which we believe him, our leader and director, and we look up to him with a certain degree of esteem and respect . . .

The desire of being believed, the desire of persuading, of leading and directing other people, seems to be one of the strongest of all our natural desires . . .

The natural disposition is always to believe. The wisest and most cautious of us all frequently gives credit to stories which he himself is afterwards both ashamed and astonished that he could possibly think of believing.

. . . It is acquired wisdom and experience only that teach incredulity, and they very seldom teach it enough.Adam Smith, Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759)

Really? Moderators are needed? Study your history. One of the most informative, substantive, and best regarded political debates in our country’s history (actually a series of debates) was the Lincoln/Douglas Illinois Senate debates. Who exactly moderated those?

The candidates spoke about the main issues of the day, most notably slavery and the status of that institution in the territories that were not yet admitted as states. They made their speeches, questioned each other directly, and responded to each other, all wothout the need for some pseudo-journalist to guide the proceedings. Why could that not work today? Do we really need media types to have a political discourse?

American political debates have ALWAYS been bad theater. Don’t watch them. They’re a complete waste of time.
